He also had to figure out what he was going to do when he left school. In some ways, he felt this project would be very helpful in that regard. He wasn't sure exactly how much tormenting he would do if he got the career he wanted, but he wanted to know how, if necessary. And not the type of torture that they taught in classes, because anyone would be expecting that.
Besides, if he broke Goldstein, he could always point that out. As an example of his work, so to speak.
