It had all been going very well, but this day, this night - damn the lunar cycle - was a big test, for how far Waffles had come. And potentially, if it went wrong for Barty, it could mess up the whole project. Having grown a bit fond of Waffles, as a boy and his pup might bond, Barty hoped it would not. Arriving in the mid-afternoon, Barty entered, having spent a lot of time thinking of how to tell Waffles, and he still hadn't come up with something he entirely liked.
Manipulating people, shaping their minds the right way, was hard work. But worth it.
"Heeello, Waffles, how are you doing?" Barty called out, a bag of sweets in one hand and a dog treat in his pocket as well, for Voldie.
