Betty merely made a face, as Pansy detailed what she remembered about her capture. Obviously, some time had passed, so the hazier memories wouldn't be as clear, but even with that she thought the girl should be able to remember the questions asked of her. Although she, herself, had never been in a hostage situation, she knew that adrenaline and fear could addle the brain. It wasn't difficult for her to imagine that if any questions were asked that Pansy hadn't included, they could have easily been forgotten.
What would not be were any that were asked in succession. Those that were pounded into the brain so often that they couldn't so easily be forgotten. Betty had done some torturing in her time, and she knew that if she kept driving the questions deeper into her victim's consciousness, answers began to appear. Honesty came much more easier than deception, and with the proper techniques, anyone could be forced into spilling their secrets.
Were the Outsiders that soft? She didn't know of many cases where they had kidnapped and tortured their victims, and even less of anyone actually dying in a case such as that. She supposed that any group that touted equality and love would be hard-pressed to kill another unless attacked, provoked, or forced into the act. Betty was new, but she had seen some things. The rebels were good in some areas, undoubtedly, but not in this one.
"Well, you never know. Perhaps they had a change of heart." Or perhaps they were merely planning something bigger. Interesting. She wondered if Rookwood had any inkling about this.
"It's too bad that you had to endure that. You're still young. Unfortunately, our world isn't made for preserving one's innocence. I'm sure you've seen plenty of that in this school, alone."
