His present was lame. Wayne knew it, but there wasn't much he could do about it. Not on short notice. At first, he was tempted to sketch her something, like the huge willow tree that seemed to move independently, or perhaps the lake. He wasn't quite sure if she'd even like something like that, but it was one of the things he knew he was good at. Anyway, it didn't matter. That would take him at least an hour, to make it present-worthy, and he was going to see her now.
So he had a cigarette. Wayne only had about three packs left, and he had cut down to the point of going crazy. Still, knowing he only had three packs and likely an endless amount of time in this castle, Wayne had wanted to savor them. Use them in case he became really anxious, or had a chance to himself outside. He thought that this particular cigarette was going somewhere special, though. She had kissed him, and he knew he had tasted like smoke his first day here. Hopefully she would like it. He didn't quite know, but that's what he liked about her.
The bright side of being here for a week or two was that he was beginning to know his way around the castle. He knew the password to the kitchens and to Gaunt Tower, which he thought both accounted for a waste of a good password. What was the point of keeping people out when both servants and students were allowed access? He didn't make the rules here. He didn't think anyone with half a brain did.
When he was almost sure that he had found the right room, Wayne lifted his hand and politely rapped his knuckles against the door.
