Tommy had gotten to the court earlier in the afternoon. He hated waiting. It made everything go by even slower than the normal nearly unbearable crawl that life seemed to insist was the natural order of things. He was dribbling the basketball around the court as she approached, pausing to line up a shot from the free thrown line.
"Hey." He greeted her, trying not to look at confused as he felt about this particular meeting. Girls were complicated and Tommy was beginning to realize that maybe Kate was more complicated than most.
When he took the shot, the ball bounced off the rim to the backboard and into the basket. At least he wasn't making a complete fool of himself by missing that one. Whew. Without hesitation, he bounded forward to retrieve it.
