It was easier to get away from the Mansion without leaving the grounds than having to tell anyone where she was going. After all, she wasn't trying to get away from anything more than the clear lines of division that were being drawn among the faculty and some of the student body. So Magneto was in the building? Big fucking deal. He didn't come in guns blazing and the Professor didn't raise much of a stink. Therefore, there wasn't anything any of them were going to be allowed to do about it. Sounds like a good reason not to be bothered with it at all. Unfortunately, that wasn't the way that most people thought. Then again, the mentality that she had grown up with said that no one was ever really your friend. Be wary of everyone and anyone, no matter what they did for you because even your best friend could be the one to unload a pistol into the back of your head.
She'd already broken that rule with both Gambit and Carol. She had trusted both of them to limits of trust. So far, Remy himself hadn't betrayed her, but he had some nasty friends. Carol, however, had betrayed her as much as possible by trying to kill her. If it weren't for skills that she had learned in training, she would have died from the fall, her skull cracked open on the frozen pavement and blood turning into some freaked out version of a ink blot.
Sitting cross legged on the pier, a cigarette held between two lazy fingers, she looked over the lake and didn't even really see it. She wasn't looking for anything, she was just sitting there with her eyes open trying to decide what she thought about how the world was being run now. Honestly, she was a sort of live and let live person. She did what was necessary to survive and even learned to enjoy it, theivery and hustling had become hobbies as much as means of keeping money in her pocket. The lake had been her escape since Magneto had started visiting. If only because there were few other places that were far enough away to drown the emotional noise to a murmur and still stay on the Institute grounds.
Ran would probably join her out there eventually, once he realized where she had gone. However for that second she had things to herself and thought it was cold, she was comfortable. That was enough for right now. Just out of touch but not completely out of reach.
