Harry was fed up with everything to do with applying to be an Auror. He'd never thought the day would come when he would insist upon being assigned an essay. And then to refuse to write the essay assigned and ask for a new one. He knew it was childish, but he was not going to write down his experience battling Voldemort. Especially when they only wanted to know the scandalous details, and not specific tactics he'd used to defeat him. He was almost disgusted enough with the entire program to drop out of the application process, but Kingsley had asked him personally to apply and he knew he could do good things in with the Aurors. He just had to get through all the sensationalized details first. But the Aurors had insisted upon his sticking to the assigned topic, and the essay had to be by midnight on the twentieth of September.
Harry had done the best he could, but writing about the year looking for Horcruxes was difficult, and he didn't want to divulge everything. But, he did his best and finally was halfway satisfied with the essay. It wouldn't win any awards, but it would do. He hoped at least. He couldn't take one more minute of being locked inside his flat, and he wasn't going to edit the stupid thing. Hermione could have a fit later, but right now Harry needed a long, long break.
It was this feeling of restlessness that drove Harry from the flat he shared with Ron for lunch. He knew Kreacher would be thrilled to make him something to eat, but in the past few months he still hadn't acclimated to having a personal House Elf. He was just glad that Kreacher spent half his time at Hogwarts these days, only coming to Grimmauld place twice a week and on Sundays to check on his 'Master Harry'. It was a good situation for each of them. He'd decided to have lunch at a small little cafe Hermione had shown him a couple weeks ago, mostly because it was populated by harried businessmen and women, who didn't have time to fawn over the 'Annihilator of He Who Must Not Be Named' as Rita Skeeter liked to call him. Just as he'd thought, the cafe was crowded when he arrived, and much to his disgruntlement, his regular table was taken by a group of middle-aged Witches who stared at him for a moment, and then went back to their gossip. Bloody fantastic, he thought, they're probably fighting over whose granddaughter gets to marry me.
He sighed and, after ordering a ham and cheese sandwich and a cup of strong tea, made his way to the only empty seat he could see. He almost turned right around and left when he saw to whom the bent head belonged, but then remembered that he was a Gryffindor, and wasn't afraid to go where angels feared to tread. "Malfoy," he said, coming to a stop next to the table. "Do you mind if I join you? Everywhere else is full."
