When Kingsley finished his declaration, Draco was left a little speechless. Not only did the Minister seem to trust him, but he also seemed to sense something inside of Draco that Dumbledore had once seen. Shifting farther back into his chair, and gradually becoming more comfortable in the presence of this powerful man, Draco turned his gaze firmly toward the man before him. "I was never one to take the easy route, despite how it might seem to some," murmured Draco quietly, closing his eyes for a moment to allow for easier concentration now. Kingsley had been the one to make the ultimate decision on his acceptance, and to Draco, that was all that mattered at the moment.
"Their leader, their official leaders, are dead, but don't for one second believe that they aren't still following them," Draco almost whispered in response to that speech. "They followed an idea, a cause, not just the person leading them. Voldemort gave them the power and the voice to support that particular cause. He was a puppet to them, but he controlled them, just the same. It was a very complex situation, one that no one on the outside could ever truly come to understand. Even Severus, at the end, was blinded by his loyalty to Dumbledore, and furthermore, his oath to my mother to protect me. He was never truly trapped by the situation, unlike myself." Draco fell silent for a brief moment, then he gazed back at Kingsley sincerely.
"Are you aware then, Minister, that I was the one who orchestrated the attacks that led up to Dumbledore's death? Are you aware that I found a way to bring the Death Eaters into Hogwarts and to breach even the most secure place in all of Britain? And, are you aware that I was threatened with my life for my father's failure, if I failed to murder Dumbledore that night? Lucius had failed to obtain the memory of the prophecy regarding Voldemort's demise at the Department of Mysteries the following year, and as a punishment, Voldemort had given me an impossible task. Yet I set out to do it, and I did everything but kill the man. Dumbledore was already dying, when I got to him. I froze. I couldn't kill him, not like that. Not when he was offering me freedom from my slavery. Severus acted, then, upon the oath my mother had forced him to take--an Unbreakable Vow, actually. He did the act, and we fled. He saved my life that night." Draco fell silent once more, looking directly at the Minister now.
"I'll welcome you to read my mind, if you are in fact an Occlumens, if you don't believe that history yourself. There were only a few people there that evening who witnessed the whole thing, and I can't truly remember who they all were. If you were the one to accept me into this programme, you deserve to know that truth, at the very least. I hide no secrets, Minister. There is no room for secrecy among fellow Aurors." His voice dropped a bit more when he said that final line. Part of Draco wondered what his point was, but he remembered that the Minister had said he'd had questions. It was time that the Minister knew just how involved Draco had directly been with the Death Eaters.
