Once the woman was out of their sight, Draco turned his attention fully to Ginny and offered her a fond smile. "Mother would be pitching a polite fit right about now. No offense, but that woman is far too outspoken, especially to someone of higher standing than she is." Draco ran one hand through his hair slowly. "Mother would have easily put her in her proper place, and she probably would have had her eating out of her hand--what with Mum being a Black, and all." Draco grinned lightly.
"And you were brilliant. She was just testing me, and I more than passed her pathetic attempt." Draco rolled his eyes. "She would never publicly force me away from you, Ginny, not if I read her correctly. Mum would call them lower class old money, if you've heard that term before. They'll do anything to get into a higher social position, and that's all she was doing by making nice with me." Draco chuckled lightly. "Clearly, they have a lot to learn if they want to best me at my own game. You're quite safe in my hands." Draco paused a little, giving Ginny a look that said that he suddenly realized he'd gone off ranting to her, almost bragging, like he used to do all the time. He flushed just a little, turning his gaze away from most of the crowd so the Prewitt family wouldn't catch this change in character.
"Sorry," he remarked quietly. "It's...well. It's just so easy to slip back into that act for me, I suppose. But you were brilliant, Ginny. Don't do that just for me, though. Do whatever you want in these situations. I know the proper conduct for just about anything that can come up, of course."
