Deep in Cho's mind was a presense that never truly slept. The huli jing simply floated in that place that was not a place where her memories and the memories of her human lingered. Slowly, slowly, she was regaining pieces of herself. She was beginning to think that one day she would regain her name and perhaps find a way to exist outside of her little witch.
As she patiently sat in that quiet not-a-place and sewed together fragments of the person she had once been, a shift in the magics of her human's snagged her attention.
Chang Cho's dark eyes flew open but the one looking out of them was not the slumbering witch. The huli jing sat up abruptly and clamped one of Cho's slender hands over the mouth of the man beside her. "Silence," she hissed in the man's ear, holding him still with inhuman strength, "invaders have breached the walls. I smell their magics and the poison on their blades."
She pulled away slightly and with a blink Cho was looking down at the man she loved in utter confusion. But then a creak in the hallway had her head snapping up as the fox's whispered warning suddenly made complete sense. Cho latched onto Cormac and rolled both of them off the bed on the far side from the door just as darts glowing with a fell light slammed into the bed where they had been.
