He actually did need Daphne, in a way. If she hadn't made him promise to take care of himself, he would've been the same old Theodore. But, he'd promised her, and he couldn't break a promise that he made to someone he cared so much about.
Theodore simply nodded, unsure of what else to say. And he was afraid that if he did speak up, his voice or his words would betray him - not that it was a bad thing to let her know just how much it meant to him, but he wasn't sure if it was exactly fair to her, given how things had wound up between them.
