Who: Astoria Greengrass and Terence Higgs
When: August 31st
Where: Terence's Flat
What: Family drama, oh la la
It was all a lie. Everything she had worked for. Everything she thought she was and thought she should be. As a child her mother made it very clear to her that she was defective. Astoria would never be smart, special or even memorable. Not for anything positive at least. Her mum made it clear on a regular basis that her stutter made her family the subject of ridicule. Not like Daphne, not like their good child. Her only hope of doing well was to strive to be perfect and work her looks, praying a man would find her and take care of her. So Astoria worked. She did everything she could to be the perfect Pureblood. Her attire was impeccable, her posture perfect just as she was taught. Yes, there was that nasty business with the stutter but she had even overcome that. Mostly. Still, her mother was never satisfied, never gave a hint of approval. To her mother she was a failure and she always had been.
Daphne was the special one. The gifted one. The one that made her mother proud and smile with delight. Daphne had a bastard son with a mudblood and still the sun only shone for her. Astoria tried to accept it. Knew her sister was amazing and idolized her for it. As she grew older the jealousy hit, curling low in her gut and only growing stronger the harder she tried to make her mum proud. All the missed opportunities, all the repressed moments in time where she sacrificed being a kid for being a proper witch. Her entire identity rested on doing her family name justice. Her entire life was focused on being a proper Pureblood witch. It was a lie. All of it was a complete lie.
Her mother was an adulterous whore, just like her sister. Daphne was the child of her mother's real love and she was the legitimate offspring of a man her mother despised but married for money. She never stood a chance. Her sister, her blood was only related on one side. Half sisters. The thought didn't compute. Daphne had a different father. A father who wasn't her father. Who wasn't Walter Nolan. Daphne was a Lestrange. An illegitimate bastard but to an even more prestigious bloodline. Daphne knew, for who knows how long and she never told her. She left Astoria in the dark. Had she always known? Always known why her mother clearly favored one child over the other? Her mother avoided directly confirming the news when she demanded the truth but the look in her eyes told it all. So did the lack of a denial. Astoria felt ill. Everything she worked towards was for naught. Everything she dedicated herself to all these years was for naught. She felt robbed. She felt cheated. She felt like an utter fool.
Astoria entered Terence's flat, simply one more change that had happened today. Earlier she might have questioned him about what he fought about with Daphne but right now it didn't seem to matter. Daphne had suddenly become a stranger. What would people say? Their entire family lost to ruin with no hope of redemption. The Greengrass name meant nothing anymore and she no longer wanted it. She didn't want to tell Terence. Didn't want him to feel the shame and fallout she did. His name would still safe if this came off but it would still be slightly tarnished. These sort of things always came out. She needed to protect him. "Terence, you need to separate yourself from me. From Daphne, from my mother. From all of us. We're not good for you."
