LONDON -- At work, in the queue for a sandwich at lunch and even on the streets as I shop for shoes, all that everyone seems to be able to talk about has been the Ministry’s latest stance on magic and the removal of wands from convicted ST’s who have been judged to be incapable of controlling their own actions and are a danger to society. Those who know me know that I don’t often like to talk about Politics, I love to spend my time focusing on which shoes go with which outfit but sometimes the things that people talk about which aren’t the latest love-triangle on ‘As the Wand Turns’ slip past. The laws are the same in both the Muggle and Magical world: convicted criminals are monitored and due to their actions do not enjoy the full freedom of other citizens. In the Muggle world, convicted criminals cannot legally own a weapon because they have proved to society that they are not capable persons to do so. Muggles have the police to protect them whilst we must rely on the Aurors, MAB and the foresight of our Minister who is working tirelessly to protect us from another War. I trust him; he is doing everything he can to ensure that the population are protected. How many times and chances should an ST be given? How many times must they beat up innocent civilians as they walk in the park, how many times must a mother and child put off shopping in Diagon for fear of being attacked or caught up in one of their protest rallies? Everyone - every witch, wizard, child and Elder fought for freedom in the last war and the ones before that. They have all lost their loved ones, seen friends fall in a war no one deserved and is it really too much to ask for that they are able to walk the streets at dusk without fear of attack? If a person cannot be trusted to not attack someone else- has been tried and found guilty of such a heinous crime by the Wizarding Justice System why then should they be trusted with an implement that can hurt them and take away not only someones life but their very liberty which was so hard won. Does the possession of a wand mean someone is a ‘Proper’ witch or wizard? Surely each and every person who has magic coursing through their blood has the right to call themselves a magical human? Perhaps ST’s who have their wands removed will be able to earn them back, to rehabilitate. Those who were wrongfully imprisoned in Azkaban due to their blood status had their wands removed and snapped in front of them before being led to that island prison. Did that simple act negate their status as a witch or wizard? Are we nothing more than the sum of our possessions? Does a glorified twig give us the right to call ourselves magical or is magic something that is as much a part of us as our organs? I’m all for the removal of their wands. Why put temptation in the way of those who have proven they cannot control their own actions even at the expense of society? |
