Who: Luag Chambers along with Davina and Alex Munro and two special guests What: Luag goes over to Davina's for dinner and gets a big surprise. When: Saturday, June 18, 2005 Where: Davina's house on Skye Rating: PG-13 for swearing Status: VERY long solo post that still needs to get the ending wrapped up.
Luag figured that when Davina sent him an owl asking him over for dinner that it was something to do with his parents. It was the only reason that she would only request him considering that any sort of event that his mother, uncle, or elder sisters and Nate attended never went well. That was one of the main reasons that he had started throwing his own festivities after all.
The apprehension over the possibilities of this dinner left his body tense as he apparated outside his sister’s house on Skye and entered after one knock. He expected a good number of things as he walked through the door, the most likely one he figured being some sort of intervention because someone in his family caught wind that he had ‘married’ Nate. What he didn’t expect as to be met in the entry hall by a very angry Davina before he even had the door closed and getting punched in the arm multiple times while being told he was an arse in Gaelic.
“What did I do?” Luag yelped in Gaelic as he tried to shy away from and block the punches. It had been a long time since his older sister had treated him like this and he felt like he was ten again.
“You know what you did!” Davina said as she hit him again.
“No, I don’t!”
“You had sex at my wedding!”
Luag’s cheeks went bright red and his mouth gaped open for a few seconds before he snapped it shut. “Lots of people had sex at your wedding,” he managed to stammer out from the lump in his throat. He raise his arm to block another slug from Davina.
“Aye, but none of them got pregnant!” she huffed.
Luag’s eyes went wide and his arms fell to his side limply. He stumbled back a step when Davina gave him a shove, his brain still reeling over what she said. His brow furrowing in confusion, he shook his head. “What are you talking about? There’s no way- We were safe...”
“Obviously not safe enough,” Davina spat.
Luag scowled as his fists balled at his side. “What do you mean obviously?” he snapped. “Don’t you think that I’d know if it was obvious!”
“Do ya know what they’re sayin’? ‘Cuz it sounds like a doosy an’ I don’ wanna miss a word of it.”
Both of them jumped in surprise. Luag turned towards the sound of the voice and noticed for the first time that Davina’s husband Alex was standing in the doorway to the sitting room with a woman who looked vaguely familiar and now that he thought about it, sounded familiar. He glanced back and forth between Alex and the redheaded woman as she looked at the Muggle with a raised eyebrow.
“Luag, right?” she asked and at Alex’s nod, she gave him an appraising look that made him uncomfortable and blew out a whistle. “Lordy, have ya grown. Not so much a little brother anymore, are ya?” A smirk quirked her lips and she winked at him. “Not that you were ever little.”
Luag went bright red as the memories came back. The drunken flirting and dancing. Something about whether it was true about Scots and kilts. Getting dragged to the byre and... He stared at her a long moment before he glanced back at Davina and then back at the redhead... Whose name he couldn’t remember for the life of him. “No... No. Ye couldnae have been... We used protection!”
“Yeah, an’ ya said it was on properly,” the woman pointed out with a roll of her eyes.
He didn’t think it was possible for his face to flush more, but he was wrong considering the heat in his cheeks. He always knew they had used protection, but he had to admit to himself now that he never actually noticed how they had done it. Merlin knew he had no clue how to use a condom back then, Nate had introduced him to that, and with how many Muggles were about, he wasn’t really doing that much magic either. Really by that part of the evening, it was amazing that he remembered actually having sex, let alone what kind of protection they used... He couldn’t help feeling a bit queasy with guilt considering what else might have been distracting him at that moment too. It was probably not good to mention that he could remember the arse of the other man having sex in the byre better than whether he had protection on or not...
“But that was years ago...” he finally sputtered out. “Ye... Ye couldnae... why did ye nae say anythin’?!”
He was really beginning to hate the way she rolled her eyes considering she was far too good at it and conveying the impression that he was incredibly dumb for asking these questions. “Let’s see. Oh, I didn’ have a number. Or an address. Or.. um... a name...” He was pleased to see that she actually had the good graces to blush. She waved a hand dismissively. “Besides, what was I supposed to do? Just call up Alex an’ say ‘hey, by the way, it’s been months, but I’m pregnant an’ I need ya ta give me the guest list so I can figure out the father’? An’ how old were ya anyways?” She shrugged. “Seemed like too much of a hassle so long after the fact.”
Luag shook his head and ran a hand through his hair. “Then why now? How can ye be sure-”
“Oh, it’s obvious,” Davina broke in with a scowl.
He was starting to really hate people using that word about this situation considering if it was that obvious, he should have known more than just learning it right now. He frowned an was about to retort, but Alex was faster at words than he was.
“She’s right, Luag,” Alex puffed out. “Ye just need ta look at the lad an’ ye can see it.” Luag narrowed his eyes as Alex looked uncomfortably between Davina and the woman. “An’... An’ the boy has magic... Kat says the Yank Ministry paid her a visit.”
They almost had him convinced until he remembered just how many magical folk were at the wedding and how drunk everyone was. “Aye, an’ there were tons o’ wizards ‘round then. She could have slept with any one o’ ‘em too.” He didn’t even have a chance to realize how crass what he said was before Davina was giving him a sharp slap upside the head that made him wince.
“Luag McBride Teintidh MacFusty Chambers! Ye dinnae talk ta a woman like that,” Davina fumed as he rubbed the spot where Davina had struck him.
“Lordy, that’s a mouth full,” Kat blew out with a whistle and a shake of her head. “Do they y’all tack on that many names?”
Luag puffed up as he scowled at the red head. “It isnae that much,” he growled, before counting them off on his fingers. “It is just my name, my Maw’s family, the MacFusty male title, my Da’s family, an’... well, my other dad’s family.”
He didn’t like the wary look that crossed Kat’s face. “The MacFusty male title? Ya won’t be goin’ an’ puttin’ that in his name, will ya? ‘Cause I have no idea how ta go ‘bout spellin’ that...”
He scowled as he crossed his arms over his chest. “Well, considerin’ we dinnae know whose he is...” He knew he was being an arse, but he really hadn’t expected the evening to be like this.
“Once ye see him, ye willnae have a doubt,” Davina said.
He just rolled his eyes. “Aye, ye keep sayin’ that, but were is the wee lad?”
“He’s out helpin’ with the horses,” Alex said before exchanging a look with Davina. “We werenae sure if he should be ‘round fer this... If ye’re done, we can go out an’ check on ‘em.”
Those words cooled Luag’s anger and he ducked his head a bit in shame. Merlin, if the boy was his, what would he think if he heard him arguing with his mother like that? Puffing out a heavy sigh, he nodded. “Aye, lead the way then,” he breathed out.
He knew where the stable was, but he didn’t trust himself to get there without someone taking the initiative. His mind still reeled from this new information. It was all circumstantial right now, but the fact that his sister and her husband would accept that this kid was his so easily... It couldn’t possibly be. He had been careful. And even if this is what he wanted, he didn’t want it this way. It made him queasy to think about it. It was a blow to his pride and in a way, he wasn’t sure if the fact that Kat had happened before Nate made it harder or easier. Trailing behind Alex, Davina, and Kat across the yard, his step slowed and his brow furrowed when he saw a young boy outside the stable playing with the dogs. The size of the boy jolted his system and he realized that even though he knew how many years had passed, he was still expecting a wee bairn to meet him or even a toddler, not a child. As they drew closer, he stopped dead in his tracks. Looking at the boy’s face was like looking back in time and he understood what his sister and brother-in-law were going on about. The gods had smiled on the boy and given him his mother’s straight hair and a red sheen that Luag’s dark brown hair never got, no matter how much sun it saw. The rest of the lad had taken after his father though or at least enough so that Luag reminded himself that he wasn’t looking at a version of himself at that age. When the boy looked up and smiled broadly, Luag’s stomach churned. Oh, there was no denying that he didn’t have a hand in that....
“Momma!” the little boy yelled as he untangled himself from the dogs and ran over to Kat. “They let me feed the ponies! Their lips tickled!”
The boy giggled as Kat hefted him up into her arms. “Oh, an’ I bet they slobbered all over ya, didn’t they?”
“Yup! The dogs too!”
“Remind me ta make ya wash up real good before supper,” Kat said with a chuckle as she planted a kiss onto his cheek. Shifting to get him solidly on her hips, she turned. “I’ve got someone I want ya ta meet, Cody. Ya remember how ta introduce yerself nicely?”
Luag couldn’t help smiling as Cody worried his lower lip and burrowed his head against Kat’s shoulder, torn between showing off and being shy. Cody stared at Luag a long time before he glanced at Alex and then Davina before looking shyly back at Luag. “Hi. My name’s Cody. It’s a pleasure ta meet ya,” he mumbled quietly, which made him hard to understand along with the drawl he had inherited from his mother.
“Hullo, Cody,” Luag replied with a smile and an offered hand. “Ah’m Luag.” He paused, not sure what else to say in this situation. He eventually just focused on the easiest information. “Ah’m Davina’s brother.” Cody looked between the two of them before taking Luag’s hand in a tentative handshake. Luag relaxed at the contact, the awe of the moment taking over. “Aye, ye’ve got a good grip there.” Luag smiled when Cody smiled at the compliment.
He was so caught up in the moment that he was blindsided when Kat said, “Cody, this is yer father.” His eyes went wide and his head whipped around to focus on Kat’s face. He couldn’t believe that she could just spit it out like that and his stomach was back to twisting nervously. It twisted even more when he saw the look of confusion on Cody’s face.
“But Daddy’s at home with Dakota...” the little boy said slowly, his voice caught between trying to say it as fact even though what his mother just said made him uncertain. Luag wasn’t quite sure what to make of that information. On one hand, at least his mother couldn’t insist on him marrying this girl. On the other, it felt weird that his boy had his own life already...
“Remember meetin’ Daddy though? An’ gettin’ ta carry the rings at the wedding? We didn’ know Daddy when ya were born,” Kat explained in a soothing drawl. “Remember when my tummy got big an’ then Dakota was born? Luag is your father like Daddy is Dakota’s.”
“So ya were married?” Cody asked.
“No,” Kat said after a moment. “Ya know how sometimes things don’ work out? Like Susie’s parents that got divorced. We just figured that out before we got married. But it means ya’re a really lucky boy that gets two daddies instead of just one.”
Cody looked more perplexed by this as he looked at Luag a long time before back at his mother. “Does that mean Daddy’s gay?”
Both Luag and Kat blushed at that. “No,” Kat sputtered. “What makes ya think that?”
“That book with the girl with two mommies,” Cody said with a pout. “She had two mommies because they were gay, right?”
“Having two daddies doesn’ mean they’re automatically gay,” Kat sighed. “There’s lotsa different types of families.”
