"Unfortunate, yes." He considered and then refrained from asking whom she worked for -- if his curiosity got the better of him, there were ways of finding out who was on the Ministry's payroll that were entirely legal and did not involve dragging his or her name into a conversation between two suspect members of society out in public. And that was always the rub, wasn't it? What they could and couldn't say, where they could and couldn't say it. He felt it day in and day out, despite being a mere family member, and he wondered how she survived at a place like the ministry, where every action was scrutinised, every comment noted. Perhaps he wasn't envious, after all. Sympathetic seemed more suitable.
