WHO: Lee Jordan
WHEN: 31 December 2004, 6 pm
WHERE: WWN studios!
WHAT: Lee's last broadcast of 2004, he has something important to say.
RATING: G
As the chords of the song began to wind down towards the end, Lee stared at the wall on the other side of the room, wand at the ready to switch over to his voice for a minute or two before it was time to sign off. He had one last chance to say something about the sort of year 2004 had been, and one last chance to say something meaningful, something deeper than who was dating who or what Quidditch team he expected to top them all at the end of the season. There was too much to say, too many thoughts in his head to fill the few remaining minutes of 2004. Lee had always been good at improvisation, however, so as the wireless flipped over from the song to him, he waited a beat before surging forward. “Well, that’s about it for me tonight. I’ve got parties to go to, people to see, fireworks to set off. You know, the usual, general mayhem and merriment. And why not? It’s blood New Year’s Eve after all. But before I go, I’ve got a few things to say to all my loyal fans out there, and one more song to help us ring in the new year and put some perspective in our lives. At least, that’s what I hope it’ll do. But in the end, it’s not up to just me, it’s up to all of you out there listening. "We’ve had a rough year... hell, we’ve had a rough few years, a rough bloody decade. I know what some of you are thinkin’. You’re thinkin’ it’s always going be rough for you, or it’s always going be rough for someone out there, and yeah, probably you’re right, but that doesn’t mean we should all sit back and just let it happen. If we just sit back and watch, we’ve lost the right we had to complain about the lot we’re given in life, because so much of life is about what you make of it and what you do with the hand you’re dealt. We’ve all got relatives out there who’ve made something of themselves from nothing, or who started over in a brand new country far away from their home and their family. So you see -- whatever you’re thinking about things being hopeless, it’s not. There’s always hope, always. There’s always a chance to make things different, but it’s not going to happen if you roll over and give up. Where would we all be if Harry Potter had decided to give up when things were at their worst? Where would any of us be right now if we hadn’t decided enough is enough, I’m not going to stand for this anymore, I’m going to fight for what I believe in and for what’s right.” Lee paused, cut off by a muffled voice in the room telling him to wrap it up. He sighed, his frustrated protests gone unheard by the higher-ups at the WWN but not by the listeners. “Looks like I’m almost out of time here. All I’m trying to say is if there’s something in your life you don’t like, don’t agree with, don’t approve of... whatever it is you’re feeling, do something about it. Don’t wait for someone else to do it for you. A wise man named Mahatma Gandhi said, and here I’m paraphrasing, that we have to be the change we want to see in the world. That’s all I want to give you lot tonight, just somethin’ to think about, because a brand new year’s the perfect time for reflection - on the year we’ve just had, and about what we want for our future. “I’ll leave you with a song by an American Muggle you might not have heard of, Bob Dylan. Happy 2005, and may your new year be blessed.” Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind’ replaced Lee, heard in its entirety. |
