Remus stumbled forward, ignoring the porlock and Severus’ shocked face. He crossed the mistletoe berries and pine needle circle and fell on his knees in front of the centaur.

“Gideon?” he gasped out. “Gideon Prewett?”

Severus ground his teeth as Remus reached out to Molly Weasley’s dead brother come back as a mythical creature. The porlock cocked its head and skittered closer to Remus’ back, short arms reaching out and then falling back to his side.

“Aye, Moony. Come back from beyond by the grace of Merlin.” The centaur leaned back, revealing a hind leg of stone. “Although, not without my troubles in this life.” Gideon looked over Remus’ shoulder and gestured the porlock closer. “C’mon, Currycombe. It’s all right, Moony’s not a bad werewolf.”

Severus snorted and Currycombe shot him a glare as he came to Remus’ side. “Cookie?” he asked. “Ye’ve sugary cookies on ye,” Currycombe said.

A watery laugh burst out of Remus and he dug in his pockets for what stray Christmas cookies he’d grabbed from the afternoon’s tea. “Here, Currycombe. Take what you want.” The porlock took a snowflake cookie and an overly-frosted snowman one and hopped to Gideon’s side.

“Giddy needs a cookie, too,” he muttered and passed the snowflake one to Gideon with a small scowl.

“Thank you, Currycombe. And thank that darkling over there, too. He’s done naught but scowl, yet I smell ointments and tinctures for healing.” Gideon smiled at Severus only to receive a deeper scowl for his pains.

“Enough blathering with dead men returned as centaurs, Lupin,” Severus barked. He stalked across the hollow. “If we don’t heal that leg, you’ll be nothing but a lawn ornament.” He flipped open the satchel and began pulling out potions, herbs, and linen, steadfastly ignoring Remus’ dazed presence.

“Darkling helps Giddy?” Currycombe asked, his tongue darting after stray cookie crumbs. “Giddy’s a good centie.” The porlock reached over and plucked a handful of comfrey to sniff, only to sneeze as Severus stole it back.

“Moony,” Gideon called softly, “that’s Severus Snape, ain’t it?” He watched closely as Remus nodded his head ‘yes’. “On our side?”

Remus sat back on his heels and watched Severus simmering with anger, and spreading a healing ointment base on Gideon’s hind leg with gentle fingers. “He’s a wonder, is Severus,” he muttered softly. “He’s the one what won the war, Gideon.”

As Severus wrapped the linen strips around Gideon’s leg, the red and white candles flared up. “That’s not all he won, Moony, ol’ man,” Gideon hissed out as the linen was tied off.
