He had found it in March. It was traditionally a good omen. Was it a good omen when a robin had a broken wing? But he saw McGonagall not far away and something - hope for luck - had caused him to scoop it up.
Perhaps it was partly an experiment. He fed it Skele-Gro. He fed it Flobberworms and miscellaneous potion jetsam. He fed it Strengthening Solution, and soon it was flying merrily about his rooms. Madame Pomfrey had found it merry. She had clapped her hands. Somehow he couldn't get rid of it after that.
But one day, in December, after another of Poppy's increasingly frequent visits, he discovered it sporting a tiny red hat with a puff of white bobble at the tip.
