It was quiet here. Quieter than it had ever been when they'd visited Ron, but then they'd never done that for any reason other than to take the Mickey out of him.
But it wasn't Ron's room anymore. This attic that had seemed too small for even ickle little Ronniekins, seemed just right for the two sharing it now, if only the ghoul would quiet down. If that would happen they might be able to hear the snow that he can sense. And wouldn't that be a gift for them, especially the younger who certainly deserves a magical Christmas. It is enough that he helped end the war, more than enough that he did his best to protect Ginny.
But his greatest accomplishment is something no one else was able to manage. You can see it in George's eyes now. He is no longer half of a broken whole. He was never really half of anything. Always, always, he had the ability to be a person in his own right. As did his twin. They just never saw the need. The world took care of that little lapse for them, though.
But, while he knows George will always miss him, never forget him; he never wanted his twin to sacrifice his life for him; in any fashion. And that's what he had been doing. Until he came.
And with him, he brought so many gifts. Not the least of which was acceptance, but the greatest possibly was the ability to let go.
Now it is time. That can finally happen.
Drifiting through the house, he says a final goodbye to his Mum and Dad by the fire; visits his old room which is now Luna's and Ron's, his spirit lightening at their happy rapport and at the sense of finally being able to free itself.
On and on through the house he goes giving silent yet very real benediction to all who live there still, until once more he is in Ron's old room.
They are on the verge of sleep, would be there if not for the ghoul who will not give any peace. His last bit of magic silences that, and Neville falls asleep in George's arms. For all the world it looks as if George is the one protecting him, the strong one.
Fred knows differently though. Blessing his former schoolmate and friend he leaves them with his last Christmas gift. The blessing of a silent night.
