Skandra wondered if she'd ever felt useless before. Being pretty and in the good graces of the goddess earned you enemies, but it also earned more by far in the way of comrades and allies. Skandra didn't have that experience. Perhaps he could have gone about things differently. She was the only woman - the only lady - who'd ever made him believe that it was worth his time to try and escape this life for another one. Being a rogue, being a wanted man in more than one country, had a way of coming back to haunt you. He'd seen his face on posters and sneered at the likeness. He'd also saved lives. The distinction between hero and villain was a fine one, and it usually started with the soul of the person who was in question.
"You don't need it anyway, do you?" Skandra asked with a lazy roll of his head. "I mean, the magic isn't what makes you, you. sure, it has utility, but wills and ways are more important than the bag of tricks you bring to bear on a problem. I was kicking ass long before I picked up the Vel - don't get me wrong, it makes things easier, but if it blew up tomorrow I'd still have to be me. And I'd still do the same things I always do."
She was overthinking their situation and trying to make herself believe they didn't have a chance when they did. It wasn't enough to just push on, though. She had to figure it out for herself. A sense of identity was always important. Regardless of who you were. Priestess or rogue or paladin or just some fucking farmer. Gershul knew who he was, after all. And even if that end result was despicable it gave him power. She would do well not to forget that, too, but he wasn't going to be the one to tell her so. It would probably be easier just to say that they had their chances and they were chances worth taking.
"I don't know if I'm gonna hold up much longer myself, but if it's worth doing, it's worth doing," Skandra's hands slapped onto his knees. "Otherwise, we might as well just kill ourselves now, right?"
The grin as he came to his feet was not forced. He honestly though it was a funny notion.
