I’m Jealous of Your Best Friend
May 21 2010

They needed to talk, they always needed to talk, it seemed. Regulus was upset, he'd been more or less so since Tuesday, he'd been fine yesterday, but today was different. Not talking hadn't worked, it just lead to more not talking plus frustration. Regulus crossed 'not talking' off the list of solutions and moved onto the next.

The problem, as it had always been between them was how to talk. He opened the door to their flat with not the slightest idea of what to say than when he left Severus'. At least the silence here would be accompanied by facial expressions.

"So." Ever the eloquent way to start.

It wasn't even his flat. He was moved in, sure, but not unpacked. He was more or less a guest still until things began to settle and things were not settling. Al slid the basket of fruit along the counter toward where he was seated, legs swinging freely. Somewhere along the line he'd fucked up, maybe not intentionally, but that seemed to be his mode of function. When things were going well, they went brilliantly. When one part of his life grew unstable, the rest of it fell apart around him.

If he hadn't been staring intently at the door, he would have fallen from the counter when Regulus opened the door.

"So."

Regulus wouldn't exactly say that this was entirely Al's fault - sure, Regulus was hurt that Al wouldn't tell him what had prompted the urge for a jump off the roof, but there were other things, like...

"Scorpius annoys the piss out of me." Regulus had made a split second decision to just blurt it out. It might have been the wrong decision, but he might as well just say it all, so he continued, "And if you don't want to tell me what happened the other night that's your choice, but it makes me wonder."

It was almost exactly what he expected. Except that it completely wasn't. Al gripped the edge of the counter with both hands and leaned forward, trying not to leap to Scorpius' defense, even if a defense was nicely lined up in his head.

Al always had to jump to Scorpius' defense. It was as natural to him now as breathing. So stomping on the reaction took a deal of self-restraint he wasn't aware he had. "What'd he do?"

He's a sodding twat. That was Regulus' initial reaction, but it wasn't a productive response. His next thought, Scorpius was just obnoxious, wasn't any better.

"He's jealous." Regulus crossed his arms and looked down, thinking about how to more accurately phrase his frustration. "He's always emphasizing how you're best friends. It's obnoxious, I know he's your best friend, I don't need him bringing it up all the time." Perhaps Regulus was exaggerating a bit, but in both of the conversations Regulus had had with Scorpius that was all Scorpius seemed to talk about.
