In the excitement of the ultrasound and preterm labor, Brook had forgotten that Sonya thought that Tom had impregnated her. When Tom returned, it came back to her. She looked sheepishly at the major and waited for a chance to explain.
"Do you have a name in mind yet, Brook? This is so exciting!"
The doctor, Francis, took her attention. "Oh! I...I thought maybe of naming him Thomas after his father." She looked guiltily at Tom. "Er, not you, Major. I mean, he's not the father, Sonya. I did mean to say it as a joke, but at the time I actually said that, I didn't...mean it...like that. Sonya, Tom isn't the father; the father is named Thomas McConnell. He's a soldier for the US military, too, but he's...left." Why didn't it look like anyone believed her? She looked at Tom apologetically. "Sorry."
She hardly realized that someone could see her guilty and apologetic looks and could believe that she was sorry for "blowing their 'cover.'"
"How long do I have to stay in this bed for long?" She glanced around meaningfully at the others milling around the medical center. "This bed isn't comfortable for lying in it for a month...and I think I'd like to have my, uh, quarters...."
