Wow, it could be a very fannish year:

SW/TX PCA/ACA: Science Fiction and Fantasy Area Special CFP: Joss Whedon (11/15/08; 2/24-28/2009)

The 30th Annual Meeting of the SW/TX PCA/ACA, February 24-28, 2009, Hyatt Regency Albuquerque

This is a special CFP on the works of Joss Whedon, including: Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog, comics (Buffy season 8, Astonishing X-Men, Runaways, Spike, Angel, Fray), Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity and Dollhouse.

We especially encourage presentations on:

* Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog, including fan and viewing dynamics
* Buffy's transformation into comics (Buffy season 8)
* Whedon's work on Astonishing X-Men, Runaways, Fray, or Tales of the Vampires/Tales of the Slayers
* The construction of place
* Socioeconomic class
* Sexuality
* Race
* Firefly's transformation into Serenity
* Teaching Joss Whedon's work

All Whedonverse topics will be considered. Please be sure to check out the essays published in Slayage: the Online Journal of Buffy Studies as well as the multiple publications on Whedon's work prior to submitting. Some familiarity with the field is expected.

Deadline for proposal submissions: November 15, 2008. The registration deadline is December 31, 2007. All participants must register by that date or will not be permitted to present or appear in the program.

I am so not getting all my email. *grumble*

The deadline for abstracts for papers on most areas is Nov. 15; early (cheaper) registration for the conference is also Nov. 15. This Albuquerque gathering is F-U-N fun (especially when you come there from cold gray winter elsewhere), there are terrific inexpensive hotels within a few blocks, *and* a ton of presenters on fandom... HP, Discworld, Buffy, anime, you name it.

The Area Chairs of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Area would like to invite paper and panel proposals on any aspect of science fiction and fantasy.

Please send queries, 250 word paper proposals, or 500 word panel proposals to

12th Annual MadCat Women's International Film Festival Entry Form 2009 Tour

BRIEF MISSION
The MadCat Women's International Film Festival was founded in 1996 to exhibit provocative and visionary works that are original in their use of the medium. MadCat is committed to showcasing women directors who challenge the use of sound and image and explore notions of visual story telling. MadCat sets itself apart from other women's festivals by curating its programs thematically and thus accepting a range of films about many different issues. By providing a dedicated exhibition venue MadCat encourages women and girls to take creative control behind the camera, increasing visibility and opportunity for women in the arts.

MadCat accepts submissions for a national touring program. The Festival curates approximately 12 programs of films and videos to tour around the country to universities, art houses, museums and microcinemas. The tour takes place each Fall.

CHANGES at MADCAT
This is an exciting year of change at MadCat. We are transforming from an annual event to an expanded seasonal touring Festival. As always we will continue to seek out and show the best avant-garde work by women directors everywhere. The 2009 touring Festival will offer all our wonderful programs to more venues across the country. The new schedule for the open call for
submissions is now exclusively for touring works, which will be selected by May 1, 2009, for a national tour to begin in the fall of 2009. The expanded tour will reach audiences at venues around the country. Past venues include:
Anthology Film Archives, Brown University, Harn Museum of Art, Harvard Film Archive, PRATT, the RISD Museum of Art, and University of Michigan, among
others.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

OVERVIEW
MadCat accepts films and video of all lengths and genres: experimental, narrative, documentary, animation, collage and whatever else you can think of. The Festival also accepts pieces produced in any year. MadCat's only parameter is that the films and videos are directed by or co-directed by women.

Ok, why don't I have James Bond icons? I have *swooned* over Bond. Bond movies may well be the first time I ever saw either of my *parents* swoon over an actor.

The SW/TX PCA/ ACA invites papers on Comics, Graphic Novels, Popular Culture -- Any Aspect of Comics, and Graphic Novels in Popular Culture will be considered.

In addition to our regular comics and popular culture related panels, we will have a roundtable discussion looking at the term Graphic Novel. We will address the question what exactly is a Graphic Novel??? Some scholars dislike the term. After all, a book like Maus is not really a novel since it is non-fiction. Yet Maus is always referred to as a Graphic Novel. Other terms like Photo novels and Sequential Art Storytelling books are less than satisfactory names as well. Is there another term that would work better than Graphic Novel or are we stuck with it as a “blanket” term for all comic/sequential art related stories in book form? The area chair seeks scholars who are willing to debate this point openly and honestly. If you are interested in participating in this interesting roundtable, please contact me.
