RP: Ariel/Tony
Who: Ariel/Tony
When: February 14th
Where: Scylla
What: Tony and Ariel swim around

When she had made her pact with Ursula, Ariel would have never believed that one day she'd turn to magic to become a mermaid, but she would have been wrong. She and Tony had taken a 'shuttle', which was like a big ship that went underwater. She'd have to look up the word shuttle when they got back on the bus.

The trip down lasted hours and she could feel the pressure of the water as they went down. It wasn't as bad as it would be in the water, but it was still there. When they arrived at the landing spot, they made sure to drink the potion right before getting out. The change happened as the door open, which was good since both the cold and the pressure wouldn't affect them as mermaids.

Ariel had made sure to wear a little pouch on her neck with extra potions in case they wanted to swim up. They put on the earpiece that Mia had given them and they could finally swim. Ariel waved her fin, getting used to her body again. "Isn't this wonderful?" she told Tony, knowing that with the earpiece, they'd have to be careful to direct their thoughts to each other. "Let's see what they have here. There's an entire city to explore."

Every time Tony had thought that he had seen it all, the bus took them somewhere new and he had his mind blown all over again. This time around, he was getting to be able to turn into a mermaid. It made him wonder just how any of this was even real.

And yet real it was. He had an earpiece that he had to make sure didn't pick up too many stray thoughts (his mind was chaotic at the best of times), so he at least could talk to Ariel even when they were under the water. He laughed, looking down at his tail and wiggling it. "This is so weird in the best of ways," he said.

"Lead the way, Ariel. I know this isn't your world specifically, but you're still the one with experience being a mermaid. I'm fighting the urge to just stay here and swim backflips right now."

Tony wasn't kidding when he said that he had a chaotic brain.

Ariel laughed, bubbles escaping from her mouth. It'd been a while since she'd seen that happen. "This is so normal in the best of ways," she said, veering and twisting in the water with ease and familiarity.

"We can definitely take the time to do that. It's been four years since I've been able to be a mermaid. I miss it." She might not want to stay as a mermaid forever, but she definitely missed this.

She swam closer to Tony, almost flush against him, while she looked up at him. "Before we go anywhere, you need to learn to direct your thoughts. If you go in there and they start getting thoughts about realities, the end of the world, and all sorts of things, then we have a problem." She grinned at him. "And yes, this is all real!"

"So says the one of us who was a mermaid." It would be more normal for her, though. Ariel had spent most of her life being a mermaid. Being human would be the weird part for her. So far, he was loving this, though. Yeah, they still had other priorities to keep in mind while here, but at least this was a place they could have fun, too.

When she swam up close to him and reminded him to be careful about directing his thoughts, he nodded, taking a moment to breathe (through gills!) and relaxing a tad. "You're right. I'm good," he said, smiling at her. "Last thing we need is the people here thinking I'm crazy or worrying."

He did laugh again when she said that this was real. "Definitely feels real." At least he had Ariel with him to remind him to stay grounded, metaphorically speaking. If he'd went alone, who knew what others might accidentally hear from him?

"Exactly, it was normal for us," she said, laughing. "Atlantica was filled with merfolks, lots of giant shells used to create buildings. I can't wait to see what they have done here. There's a lot more use of coral in the hotel we're in. I guess without humans there's just more coral to use. Or maybe there's more here."

She chuckled. The water moving between their bodies. They were so close that with each movement, she could feel the water that Tony displaced. "They might be overwhelmed. They already have people from a different species, coming through means they don't understand. I don't think adding the end of the world would help."

She poked his shoulder with a finger. "How does that feel?" she teased. "Come on, let's swim around the town, get our bearings before we go in and talk to people."

"I'm actually curious myself. Your people used shells, so maybe the people here used the same? Either that or coral." There would be a lot more of it since they didn't have to deal with pollution like people did on Earth.

"No, you're definitely right. Last thing I need to do is traumatize people because my mind is thinking about eighty things at once." Slowing down his brain was an issue that he'd always had, but he could do this. "I just need to get my bearings a little bit." That and maybe thinking about what he was doing rather than thinking too far ahead. That might help.

He just laughed. "Feels like I'm really being poked," he joked back. He started to swim forward, doing a front flip because he felt like it. He probably needed to get a few more of those out of his system before they talked to too many others.

"Yes, shells and coral were our main use for buildings, but shells were rarer so that's what we had at the palace," she explained with a smile. If it sounded a little snobbish, she didn't see it. it was just the way things were.

"Or the fish. We don't want to traumatize them either. They can't even understand about the different realities," she said, laughing, something that she had been doing a lot more since their arrival here, and she was already a happy person. "So how do I help you do that?"

Ariel swam around him. She could twist and turn, managing to never actually touch Tony while she circled him. "If this is what you need, we can play. Find a pumice stone, toss it and we race to get it. We can use other types of stones, but pumice ones take longer to float down so it's more interesting."

"I'm not that surprised that large enough shells to make buildings out of were kind of rare." It didn't really ping to him as snobby to say it, either. He'd grown up with money so he understood that it afforded things like rarer materials. She didn't say it in a snobby tone, so he understood what she meant by it.

"No, I wouldn't want to traumatize the fish, either." Whom he still totally wanted to talk to. They might not have anything that he could really relate to to talk about, but he wanted to hear what they said anyway. When would he get the opportunity to talk to a fish again? "Just remind me to focus on whatever we're doing if my mind starts to wander too much. I'm a little naturally scatterbrained, as I'm sure you can tell." His brain just moved too fast to keep on one subject for long. While he could disguise it when speaking to others normally, getting a look into his actual mind could probably be disorientating for anyone doing so, or just getting to hear it.

He nodded, searching around for a pumice stone. Maybe some more physical exertion would keep his mind more calm. Once he found one, he lifted it up for Ariel to see. "You ready?"

"Well, they aren't buildings the way you think but still our buildings," she said, but Tony would see soon enough the difference between people and mermaids. They didn't need to be closed off in air bubbles. They lived in the sea, with water always around them.

"Come on, let's go," she said, starting to swim where she saw the largest concentration of structures. They were near a rock formation that probably had caves in them, always a good source of protection.

"Why don't you tell me about your life at home?" she asked, hoping that it would help him focus on one thing. "You talk about pop culture and the avengers, but you never talk about your private life. Were you married? Did you have children? Grand hildren?" She had no idea how old human had children in Tony's world. In hers, by age forty, most people had grandchildren, at least among the humans. "Do you miss being home?"

"What do you mean?" He was about to ask more when they actually came upon the city and he could see what she likely meant. The structures were more open than traditional buildings on land. The water could easily flow in and out of them. "Oh...I think I get what you mean."

He followed her as she swam, listening to the questions that she asked. "I was married. We had a little girl named Morgan," he told her as they swam. "No grandchildren yet that I know of, although I'm sure Morgan had some when she grew up." He swallowed, forcing himself to put a smile on his face. "I miss them every day, but I hope they're happy with their lives." Thinking like that made it a lot easier for him to be here.

"Even at palace, we had very few enclosures. The perimeter was patrolled, but rooms were very open. Privacy is less valued than among humans, but yes, you can see all the openings." She wasn't that humans were built to live with such open spaces. "It's got a sense of freedom, but also of trust that others won't invade your space."

She smiled. "i would hope that a little girl doesn't have children. Morgan, I like the sound of the name. I was meant to have a child, but I kept postponing." She nodded. "I'm sure they are. I feel the same with Eric. He wouldn't like it here, he'd worry about obligations and Tirulia, and I- well, I think I'm meant to be here, and it sounds like you were meant to be here. People fight against this new future we have, but going home and dying or not having a happy life is not better than the unknown."

Ariel swam around him, squeezing an arm. "I had a similar discussion with James. He knew that he was going to go back to his death, but he felt that death was better than this. I can't believe it; I refuse to believe it. We can find new lives, new loves and new futures here."

"There are some human cultures that are less focused on privacy than others. In our past, too, when people had less money for rooms in the home, they tended to share one or two bedrooms among the whole family." The more individualistic the culture, the more they valued privacy, it seemed. Tony had used to keep a wide berth between himself and others, but even he now seemed more OK with leaving doors open unless he was sleeping. You learned to live with a lot less privacy when you had a child.

"I more mean in her future. Last I saw her was when she was five." It was hard to think of her growing up without him, but as long as she was growing up in a safe world, he could handle it. That's what was important to him. "I'm with you, though. I think we're supposed to be here. I think the bus is trying to pick the right people to be here to help out other worlds."

He smiled back at her when she squeezed his arm. "That's what I'm hoping, too. New lives, loves, and futures." His life at home was apparently done with, so he was fine with staying on the bus and helping other worlds. All he could do was wish Morgan and Pepper well.
