It was funny. John hadn't realized before, but Derek was right. They did have the same color eyes. Same color as his mother, too. In everything else, John had really taken after his dad's looks. That was why it hadn't been terribly surprising when his Derek, the first one, had figured things out relatively quickly. Of course, that Derek had also known that time travel existed and that Kyle had gone back and never returned. None of which had happened for this Derek, yet. "Maybe there's a hidden relation and we just don't have any geneaologists left to find it," he said with a smile. It was the best he could do, the closest he could come to the truth.
He laughed softly at the story. "So, if you were nine, you must be getting pretty close to being the old man, now," he teased. "Sounds like he was a good guy, though. Not enough of those, sometimes. Kyle was lucky, too, had a big brother like you to look out for him." John knew that, too. At least, what it was like to have Derek looking out for him. He hadn't appreciated it enough at the time, unfortunately.
John let the subject of base locations drop, afraid to pry too deeply and lose some of the hard won progress he'd made. He wasn't an idiot. He knew Derek was confused by his resemblance to Kyle and the crazy motley crew of wizards and superheroes with whom John travelled. But, he didn't trust him. They were nearing the portion of the tunnels Steve had shown him the day before, anyway. He'd need to switch gears in a bit to nudge them toward the food. "Let me know if you come up with anything we can help with. At the very least I want to make sure we stop whatever plan they've got in motion."
