"Don't always get what we want," John pointed out with a smirk. "It certainly doesn't understand people, whether it cares to see them or not."
Listening, he nodded. "That's what they tell me. The resistance leader is distant, doesn't talk to anyone some days but the machine he reprogrammed. No one understands what he's doing, but they still need him to win the war. To be human." Maybe Steve did understand. "People leave him, too, go against his orders, do things he doesn't want them to do. But, he still fights for them. For the whole human race."
John chuckled. "Yeah, figured you didn't have a clue." Taking a breath, it was back to business. "Connected and able to communicate, but the infiltrators are also autonomous. Couldn't do what they need to do if they weren't, especially if they're being sent to when instead of where." He huffed. "It's terrifying to people. It's why they're so careful, checking that strangers they meet bleed like humans. If they had more dogs around here, that would help, too. They sense metal." He laughed softly and shook his head. "Check for homicidal tendencies, see if anything's out of the ordinary. Sounds like S.O.P. to me."
Following where Steve indicated, he nodded. "Easy enough. I'll see when I can get on patrol next and get it done." One more little thing they could do, one more little way in which he could help these people before the bus yanked them all back.
