Stephen followed Peter to the place he'd picked out and sat at one of the worn wooden picnic tables. "Half the bread is fine for me. Take all the soup or whatever it is." He wasn't bothered about fasting. He'd done it often at the monastery. He could look at this experience as an exercise in deprivation, in learning to detach oneself from the physical needs of the body. Reframed like that, it didn't seem daunting at all.
"Yeah, it's tough," he answered. "All the little everyday things are. Not playing the piano anymore? I could deal with that. Having a hard time getting dressed every morning? Not so much."
