Who: James Potter & Remus Lupin
When: January 3rd, very early
Where: Starting in the gym
What: Checking up on each other (that's what James is telling himself, anyway)
Warning: James' angst? Probable language and mentions of death.

James had managed a few more hours of blissful, dream-filled sleep after Ariel had left, but whatever shock or pain that had kept him silent under the duvet for days seemed to have been disturbed by the redhead's kind words and cups of tea. Suddenly he was practically dissolving in energy that swept angrily through his veins, singing against every last nerve and whipping magic up so that it buzzed in his fingertips and along the back of his neck. He'd tried to sink back, to bury himself under blankets and darkness until it simmered down, but it didn't work.

So he was up. Dressed in whatever jogging bottoms and t-shirt he'd found first, he stepped out of his room and began to walk. James thought about going to the library, but he twitched too much for that. He thought about the magic room, but the tingling in his spine made him think he might blow it up. So he did what he'd always done when this happened. He went somewhere he could move. At school it had been the pitch, while later it had been scaling and repairing wards around the cottage. As there was no quidditch or overgrown gardens here, he went to the gym.

James was just entering when it occurred to him that Moony was usually stirring around this time. The patronus he conjured was so bright and angry it was almost impossible to look at, but he sent it off to Remus' room anyway, before heading to the treadmill.

He didn't know how long it was before he heard someone enter. James was breathing hard, sweat sticking his shirt to his frame and plastering his usually wild hair to his forehead. His lungs and legs and back were screaming, but it was a welcome distraction to the parts inside that hurt, so he was hesitatant to press the red button as he glanced over his shoulder and recognised his friend. Raising one hand in his direction, James reluctantly slowed the machine to a gentle jog.
