What: A look into Steve's new life and headspace.
Steve had spent his time after the war with the Chitauri trying to get used to modern life in New York City. Of course, with his re-emergence he'd been busy with charity work (Tony really hadn't been far off when he joked that Steve was rebuilding orphanages) and despite his attempts to stay out of the lime light he found himself photographed quite often. That was familiar, at least, even if the cameras pointed at him now were very different.
He had managed to keep the location of his Brooklyn apartment a secret, at least, and that was something he was eternally grateful for. He'd thought of going to Stark Tower a few times, or at least stop by the restaurant where the waitress worked, but he found more solace in riding his Harley Davidson outside the city or in the gym that was a bit of a throwback to the 40's. His apartment was the same, save for a few updates, such as a laptop provided to him by S.H.I.E.L.D. and a television. Steve had heard about televisions, of course, since they'd been invented back in the 20's, but he had never had one or seen one. But then, he'd seen plenty of other things that were pretty intense. He hardly ever turned on the thing, but he guessed it was all right to have it around. His favourite invention that he'd been provided with was the CD/MP3 player in the apartment, not to mention the collection of music he'd been provided with. He was 99% sure Phil Coulson had had something to do with that. The thought made him smile the tiniest bit. He hadn't known Phil as well as Tony, but he still missed him. After his death, and after the final fight, he had gone back to the cards and signed each and every one of them after restoring them to their original condition as best he could. He'd thought of having some sort of memorial put up for the man and put the cards there, but Director Fury had requested them instead, and Steve figured that since S.H.I.E.L.D. was supposed to be secret, a public memorial probably wouldn't have been allowed anyway.
When he went to the gym he processed everything that happened during the battle with Loki and the Chitauri, and each time in his mind he saw Tony taking the nuke through the rift and doing exactly what he'd said Tony would never do. He made the sacrifice play, no wire cutting, nothing. In that moment Steve not only saw himself, but he thought of Bucky as well, and missed him all the more. To everyone else it may have been 70 years, but for him everything was still fresh and painful. That was the main reason he'd been avoiding Stark Tower. Seeing Tony not only reminded him of his own sacrifice, or of the comments he'd made to Tony previously, but with Bucky's memory added into it all, he simply couldn't deal with it. Not at first, at least.
It had been months, and Steve was finally calming down. Going to the gym had helped, focusing on art had helped, and learning about the different genres of music he'd missed rather helped as well. It was time, though, to get back into the swing of things, which meant going to Stark Tower. He started packing clothes, running the things he wanted to say to Tony through his mind as he prepared to head back into life as an Avenger.
