9 Squares - Millie - Prize

Prize

Millie - SFW
The sun had long gone down by the time Millie finally made her way back to the office, her body aching from a day packed with back-to-back tours. She had spent hours walking the Grange, answering questions with the same bright enthusiasm for the chef who was interested in sustainable practices, the college students eager to learn about the farm's ecosystem, and the high schoolers, hoping to understand their community's history. Even the food club had left her with a satisfied smile, despite the exhaustion that now weighed on her like a heavy blanket.

She pushed open the door to her office, expecting the usual sight of paperwork, calendars, and notes waiting to demand her attention. But instead, her eyes landed on something unexpected - a single daisy resting delicately in the center of her desk.

Her favorite flower.

For a moment, Millie just stood there, staring at it, the soft petals almost glowing in the dim light. Next to it, a small, handwritten note. She reached for it, her fingers brushing the edge of the paper as she turned it over. No name, no signature - just the daisy and the note.
For a day well done.
Her heart gave a little flutter, and she couldn't help but smile. She didn't know who had left it, didn't know if it was a thank you from someone she had toured today or a quiet gesture from someone else entirely. But it didn't matter. The real prize wasn't the daisy, or even the note - it was the way it made her feel.

Seen.

Appreciated.

There was something undeniably sweet about the anonymity of it all. Millie closed her eyes for a moment, letting herself savor the warmth the gesture stirred inside her, before tucking the note into her pocket and leaning down to inhale the soft, familiar fragrance of the daisy.

For now, she would leave it a mystery. Some gifts, she decided, we best left without answers. © tessisamess
