Unbeknownst to most students, excluding those that mattered, tonight was the first of four try-out sessions for a house Quidditch team. This night especially was reserved for Slytherin, arranged in part by their captain. It seemed like a perfect night for a round of tryouts, as well; clear skies, easy-on-the-skin temperatures not breaking any sort of cold barrier, and a doable breeze welcomed any to come out and have a few games. The pitch was easily lit up for the trials, since they were scheduled at night, by enchanted light posts and lanterns strung around at just the right spots. All in all a good night for Quidditch. That was until the Slytherin team broke out the spare equipment from the shed, and prepared for their round of trials. It was steady becoming apparent that something was decidedly wrong. When the quaffle was picked up and tossed around, an ethereal wisp of white was left in its wake. As beaters took up their bats, more of the phantom dust was found -- the snitch itself was found dulled with some sort of coating, though a mere brush aside cloth seemed to rectify that. And on went the try-outs... Ten minutes elapsed without incident, but then all was lost. An itch at first, and then fiery fury upon aggravation with nails. Not painful, per se, but vastly uncomfortable. Wherever a hand went, the powder transferred, doing its deed unrelenting. Faces, arms, legs, and (dare we say) rumps were ablaze with the prickling and twitching of Zonko's own line of itching powder (Guaranteed to Make Them Burn -- Or Else Receive a Full Return!). The try-outs carried on, but once feet touched ground, not a soul lingered a moment longer. A shower -- perhaps three -- would help that nasty itch. Oh, don't worry. It does come off! Eventually. |
