Caradoc Dearborn never truly felt like he owed people anything. Money, promises, artefacts, his presence - everything was doled out in measured doses based upon his own convoluted calculations. Apart from very few people he truly claimed to love, he never broke this indignant cycle for anyone.
But then there was Narcissa Malfoy.
She was neither somebody he had ever claimed to have loved, nor someone deserving of his attention if he went by the rules of socialisation as set by his affiliation with the Order of the Phoenix. Still, Narcissa Malfoy was someone he thought about more than he did about most other people, and there was no denying that he had always thought about her when they were at Hogwarts together, and then when she married fucking Malfoy, and when she had his child, and when the war set all around them like a poisonous fog. Yes, he thought of and about her often and then rubbished his own thoughts. Just like he was doing it today.
With a box of Honeydukes' toffees and an extremely rare portrait of Salazar Slytherin charmed into a minuscule size and hidden in one of the many hundreds of magically adjusted pockets inside his coat, he had arrived at the Merlin & Morgana Museum. Ambivalent to the shouts of the guards to announce himself and his purpose of visit, he moved brazenly through the polished halls before opening hours to find Narcissa. He knew she was in here somewhere, planning the upcoming gala. And turning a corner, past a polished marble column, he found her.
"Hullo, Mrs Malfoy," he called out to her. "I hope you're not too busy. I've brought you lunch."
Lunch, of course, was the box of toffees that he presented to her with a flourish.
