Mary had taken a rare early leave from her office and she was glad about it. She needed to run a few errands before finalising the next round of interviews with the families of seven fallen aurors about the war memorial, and that was only the beginning. To add to this, she also had to finalise her order of dress robes with Madam Malkin and visit her vault at Gringott's. She had been agitated and busy the entire day and stress had led her to consume a whole small bag of freshly made toffees a junior colleague had brought in for her after his visit to Hogsmeade and Honeydukes.
She wove through the crowd and first went to Gringotts. She was the custodian of not just her own inheritance but that of her missing-presumed-dead brother as well, and it always took her twice the amount of time to work with the goblins on keeping her finances straight. Once she was done visiting her vault, she felt lighter, brighter. At first, she merely thought it was the burden of a task done being lifted from her shoulders, but the spontaneous kiss she planted on the cheek of the extremely grumpy goblin who always took her to her vault was not just uncharacteristic, it was quite shocking for both parties involved as well. Ordinarily she would've doubled over with embarrassment at such brazen abandon, but today, instead of apologising, she merely shook her head and walked out of the bank, leaving the goblins staring after her. She was still contemplating why she had done what she had done as she walked down Diagon Alley towards Madam Malkin's shop when, like a wave churning and rising up inside of her, she felt the severe urge to kiss again. Before her brain could quash this notion, her body reacted, every nerve of her being straining to execute the task, and she stopped, turned around to face the man who had been walking just a few steps behind her. Without pausing to consider her next action any further, she grabbed the man's arms, raised herself on her toes, and planted a kiss square on his lips.
And only then she realised she was presently, quite unashamedly, kissing Lucius Malfoy.
