Aurora had popped the cork on the merlot a good forty-five minutes before bothering to bring dinner to Severus’ attention. She had no reason to believe he would turn her down, but even if he was already committed elsewhere she could drink the bottle on her own. What harm would it do on a Saturday evening? None that she could think of. So she’d sent to the kitchens – asked them to surprise her (the house elf on the other end of the line seemed rather perplexed, and needed some reassurance that anything would be fine, really) – and levitated a small table and a pair of chairs up to the top of the tower. No, she hadn’t mentioned that they would be dining outside in her invitation, but it was a beautiful night. The slowly shifting glow of the sun and sky begged not to be ignored, and she couldn’t exactly argue. Besides, as much as he was likely to grumble about it, Aurora had the distinct feeling that Severus may actually appreciate the view. She regretted the lack of time she had spent with him since moving herself into the castle. Intentions could be all very good and true, but actions spoke louder, and she knew that. Excuses could be made time and time again, but they weighed heavily on her, and the fact was that there simply wasn’t one good enough to ever apply to the situation. She would stop making them, then. There was no reason for it. Severus had been too important to her for too long, and the truth was that she missed her friend. The idea of working with him at Hogwarts had weighed somewhat heavily in her decision to apply for the position in the first place. Too much of her time had been wasted on staying hidden during the war. It was this thought that floated through her mind, again, as she tapped her fingers gently against the wood of the large dining table in her rooms. The oak surface reverberated back to her as she focused – rather intently, so as not to spill – on pouring out two equal glasses. Once finished she set the bottle down carefully and bent at the waste, craning her neck sideways so she could compare the level of liquid in each goblet. They looked even enough, but Aurora knew that given the opportunity to stand there and overanalyze them, she would. Instead she tore herself from the table with only two backwards glances and returned to the task of charming her hair up into something of a loose bun. If nothing else, Severus’ arrival would distract her from not being able to perfect that. |
