Darkness enveloped them, spreading out beyond them, across the face of Hyrule.
Link forced himself to his feet, clasped Zelda's hand and dragged her back, away from the glowing eyes that pierced the living blackness. With the Master Sword clenched tightly in his left hand, he swung at the gaping mouth that joined the eyes, and laughed at their helplessness. The ground beneath their feet trembled as the creature stepped forward.
"Run!" Link flung her toward the further reaches of the darkness. There, the light still filtered through the gray swirls.
"I'm not leaving you." She planted her feet. Her slender fingers dug into his arm. "We need the other piece of the triforce.
"Too late." Link back-stepped, one cautious step at a time. If she wouldn't leave without him, he'd have to take her out of the shadows himself. "It died with Ganon. Without it..."
Light swirled in the heart of the darkness, just behind the beast, framing it until Link could make out a hulking form three times his size with three arms and three glowing eyes. The light intensified at the heart of a wind that tore Zelda's hand from his.
"Somebody lose a triforce?"
Link felt the power even before he recognized the voice.
"Kevin!" Zelda screamed in relief. "Now, Link! Before it's too late!"
They spread apart until they formed a triangle with Kevin at its pinnacle, themselves at its base. Link saw the light of the triforce of wisdom and knew that Zelda had raised her hand. Raising his own, the back of his hand lit, draining power from his courage to fuel the segment of the triforce he possessed.
On the other side of the monster, the triforce of power flashed in the darkness. Energy lanced between them, from one segment of the sacred symbol to another, until the monster was trapped in the holy triangle and the darkness had vanished inside the light. The monster screamed in agony, clutching its misshapen head as it was sucked into the light.
And then it was over, the darkness gone, Zelda on her knees, his legs trembling, Kevin bent double. The energy faded from their talismans and Link felt his strength return, slowly at first, but then with enough force to take his breath away.
Zelda reached out one hand to him, another to Kevin. And, though he'd been jealous of Captain N in the past, this time, Link reached out to him as well.
Hyrule was all about threes, after all.
