"Tezuka," Fuji said, "You're dripping."
Tezuka looked at him wearily and stripped out of his jacket. "Sorry."
Fuji's expression softened and he walked forward to claim Tezuka's lips. "What happened?"
"It's nothing." Tezuka hung his coat up and forced his shoes off. "I'll go change."
Fuji watched him go into the bedroom of the small suite that they lived in and closed his eyes, pressing a small button on the wrist band he wore. The news immediately started playing in his earpiece.
A bus driver was the latest victim of the Fates, a female voice read. Forty year old Kotara Fumiki lost control as she drove a full bus down the street, running it into a crowded sidewalk...
Fuji turned the volume down and walked into the dining room to heat the meager rations of rice that was their dinner, then sat down to listen. Today was worse than most days; the acid in the rain was higher than normal and people were especially on edge.
"They were after Oishi." Tezuka sat down across from him.
"Did they get him?" Fuji asked listlessly.
"Yes, but he should be fine in a week or so." Neither of them mentioned that a week was too long; the police force was short as it was and even a week was hard to spare.
Fuji's hand moved to where Tezuka's rested on the table and gently squeezed them. "Did you wash yet? The acid is fourth level today."
"Yes, I did."
"You should rest tomorrow." Fuji lifted Tezuka's hands to his lips. "Everyone will be there tomorrow."
"You'll need me there." Of course they would need him there. There weren't nearly enough officers to even cover the minor crimes that happened, let alone the daily attacks from the Fates. "Rest."
