Teddy followed Lilly through woods. Despite the fact that there appearances tended to cause staring and general grief from the majority of the town, they had their advantages from time to time. Lily’s eyes were as good at night as Tessa’s were during the day, he had a good enough nose that he could pick out ingredients in cooking, and both him and Lily had a range of hearing beyond what most people had. They came in handy in odd situations such as this. Still one had to wonder what Lily had meant by gifts.
“There it is.”
Teddy looked ahead. He could make out an open chain link fence and a building beyond that seemed to have power running to it. He went up, and again had to keep from bowling over Lily.
“Ok Lily, you really need to stop doing that.”
“I don’t want to go back.”
Teddy’s eyes widened. Lily sounded scared and she was shaking. That was not comforting.
Please make it stop.
Teddy shook his head. Right now, he needed to keep Lily from having a break down, find Tessa, and get away from this place. He went up and grabbed Lily’s hand.
“Come on Lily let’s get Tessa and get out of here.”
Lily seemed to calm down a bit and nodded. They walked though the door and headed through the hallway. Teddy had no clue where they were going, but Lily seemed to know the way. Finally, they came to a room that had a door sitting in it.
“Tessa!”
Teddy let go of Lily’s hand and ran to Tessa. She was curled in a ball, rocking and crying.
“Tessa what’s wrong?”
“Make it stop. There’s so much blood.”
“What blood? What are you talking about?”
“She’s seeing the past.”
Teddy whirled and stared at Lily. She was on the floor in the door way shaking, eyes wide. “We need to get her out. We need to get out of here.”
She coughed and grabbed at her arms.
“Lily, you’re bleeding!”
“There are still a lot of emotions in this place even if they are echoes. We need…”
Lily coughed again and doubled over. Teddy looked back an fourth between the two unsure what to do for them.
“Ok, whatever this is it needs to stop NOW!”
The air in the room seemed to pulse, then nothing. No bad feelings, no coughing or crying. Teddy blinked and looked back at Tessa. She uncurled and looked around the room.
“What just happened?”
“You were seeing the past. What happened here eleven years ago.”
Both Teddy and Tessa looked at Lily, who was slowly getting back up. Teddy scowled at her.
“Ok Lily, what the fuck is going on here?”
“I’ll explain I swear I will, but can we please get out of here first?”
Teddy sighed. He helped Tessa to her feet, and followed Lily out of the building.
After walking for about thirty minutes, Lily collapsed against a tree. Teddy and Tessa took a seat opposite her. Tessa was half asleep on her feet, and Teddy was not much better. Lily sighed and looked into the tress, where the mist still clung. Then, she started singing. I was a song neither Teddy or Tessa were familiar with. I wasn’t Japanese, but it didn’t seem to be any other language either. Tessa made a content sound and snuggled up to Teddy. She yawned and closed her eyes. Teddy yawned, the long day and night catching up to him. Lily finished the song and sighed. Teddy fought sleep, after all Lily still had quite a story to tell.
