Summary: Rodney doesn't shut up and John's control slips, telling him off in ways he shouldn't.
"Damn it, McKay can't you just shut up?" John snapped, finally losing patience. They were on their way to the infirmary for their post-mission check up, after having debriefed Elizabeth. Ronon and Teyla had already headed to the infirmary and so no-one was there to witness John's outburst.
"But I was only..." Rodney started once more, ignoring John’s order to stop arguing with him.
They'd have to run away from hostile villagers again, because McKay had inadvertently insulted the chieftain's son. Again. And John was sick and tired of it. They needed allies, not more enemies than they already had.
"No but, Rodney! I've had it with you. The situation was perfectly under control until you had to open your big mouth. You really have to learn to let others do the talking, because, McKay, you suck at it."
They had stopped in the middle of the hallway and John could see the first signs of Rodney getting angry as well. He flushed slightly, glaring at John, an annoyed look appearing on his features.
"Oh please Colonel," he said sarcastically, "that chieftain's son..."
"No, McKay it was not the chieftain's son's fault. You insulted him. You insulted his intelligence. And I don't care if he deserved it or not, we need supplies. So you suck it up and deal with it, are we clear?" John glared at Rodney.
"But..." Rodney made another attempt, and something in John snapped. He just wanted for Rodney to shut up and listen to him when he was told something. Damn it.
"You know what, McKay? I know why you never get laid. The person who wants to be naked with you has yet to be born. They'd never willingly take their clothes off in fear you'd insult them!"
The moment the words left his mouth John regretted them. He'd gone way too far when he had used one of Rodney's few obvious weaknesses against him. Rodney had come to him, embarrassed and insecure, asking John for dating advice. That John now had slipped and used it to hurt Rodney might have seriously damaged their friendship.
And just howhurt Rodney was, was clearly written all over his face. Rodney couldn't lie convincingly if his life depended on it, his emotions for all the world to see in his eyes and his features.
His look spoke of hurt and betrayal, his lips pressed into a thin line. After a second, his chin jutted and he crossed his arms in front of his chest, "Well, thank you for your insightful comment, Colonel. I think I better go to the infirmary now, I'm a busy man and can't afford delays." With that he turned and started to walk.
John watched helplessly as Rodney made his way down the corridor, his back stiff and his whole posture tense. He wanted to call after him, wanted to apologize, but the words stuck in his throat. He would give Rodney some time to gather himself and would try and talk to him in his quarters later that night.
He could only hope Rodney would eventually be able to forgive him.
