#15 First Glance
When Speed opened the door and Eric saw the grin on his face, Eric started to rethink accepting Horatio's invitation to dinner. "I think I hear my mother calling me," he said, turning toward the street and sweet freedom.
"Get in here, Delko," Speed said with a chuckle as he snagged the sleeve of Eric's shirt and pulled him inside. "Dinner'll be ready in fifteen minutes, give or take. Want a beer?"
"Sure." Eric watched Speed head into the kitchen and wondered what his friend was up to. Knowing Speed, it was probably trouble.
"Here you go." Speed handed him a beer and sat down beside him, popping open his own can.
"Thanks," Eric said, opening his can and taking a few quick gulps. "What are you up to?" he asked after a few moments of silence.
Speed, his best "who, me?" expression firmly in place, said, "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Sure you don't. I know that look, Speed." Eric turned his body so he was facing him. "You always look like that when-"
"Hey, Dad, you seen my clothes? I could have sworn I took them into my room. Oh, hey, Eric."
Eric stared, mouth open and jaw valiantly attempting to hit the floor as he got his first look at a Saurnaus in all his glory. "Hey," he finally managed to croak out as soon as he was able to rip his eyes away from Ryan's lower half and see the amusement on Ryan's face. "Nice wings."
Ryan's grin grew wider, giving Eric a great view of his fangs. "Thanks." He focused his attention on Speed. "Do you know where my bag is?"
"Probably by the door where you left it," Speed said, making no attempt to hide that he was checking out Ryan.
Ryan raised an eyebrow. "Like what you see?"
Speed shrugged. "Nice, but your father is better hung."
Ryan snorted as he searched for his bag near the door. "You would say that; you're sleeping with him. Everyone knows I outdo Dad in that respect-"
"I'd say we're about evenly matched," Horatio said, coming out of the kitchen. "Go put on some clothes before Eric implodes, please."
Ryan looked at Eric and winked as he flexed his wings. "I think he can handle it, but if it'll make you happy."
Horatio shook his head and sighed as Ryan walked down the hallway and out of sight. "My son," he said with a chuckle.
"He's your son? Why didn't you tell us?"
"It's not exactly something that can be common knowledge. There's no way we can explain it that would be credible."
"Yeah, but it's not like Calleigh, Alexx, and I don't know about the whole alien vampire thing," he said, blushing when Horatio laughed at his description. "You know what I mean."
"Ryan also didn't want you guys to treat him any differently than you would anyone else in the same position," Speed told him. "Why do you look so confused? Too difficult a concept?"
Eric sent a dirty look his way as he addressed Horatio. "Why would he do the things he's done, H? The key gun, questioning Speed's cases, picking arguments?"
Horatio smiled and scratched behind his right ear. "Ryan has a tendency to poke the hornet's nest, particularly when it comes to men he's attracted to. He likes his guys fiery and passionate."
Speed snorted. "Yeah, no kidding." Seeing the question in Eric's eyes, Speed said, "A couple of Ryan's old lovers paid us a visit after hunting down a wanted 'alien vampire'. They were very…high spirited."
"So you're saying he screwed me over with that key gun, because he's hot for me?"
"Eric, did you ever read the final report?" Speed asked. "Of course not. You and that stupid Cuban temper and pride… He wrote the final report noting in great detail how it was you who found the key gun."
"He also told me when he brought it in, but asked me not to mention that he told me it was you who found it. I knew what he was doing," Horatio said.
"You guys aren't telling all my secrets, are you?" Ryan said as he came back in.
"The jig is up, Ryan." Speed got up off the sofa. "I'm going to check on dinner. Coming, H?"
Eric stared after them, watching them leave him with Ryan. His eyes narrowed as Speed's head turned and he gave Eric a bright smile and a slight wave. Speed was definitely a dead man next time Eric caught him alone.
