"You. Asian guy." The guard's voice cut through the murmur of voices, and Evan turned, his chin lifting, shoulders squaring, his mouth pressed into a displeased line. He'd never done well with disparaging remarks, or being treated as different because of his race. In Seattle, with its large Asian population, it didn't matter, but here, it did. He tilted his head, a silent what do you want? and the guard frowned and gestured with his shock rod. "Come on. Someone wants a better look."
Evan paused a moment, then complied. The guard pushed him into a small open room, barred against his escape. He expected no less.
Outside the bars stood a small woman, blonde and dressed in pink. It was a color far too cheerful for this place. She was tiny, no bigger than Emily, and just as slim. Pretty, delicate, big green eyes.
Evan studied her a moment. "You don't look like someone here to buy a human being." His deep voice was neutral, neither condemning or particularly curious.
