"Maybe he's a newbie. Doesn't have much experience breaking anything," Beckett wondered. It happened with a lot of new masters; they thought they could be tough as nails and make sure they got their brand new slave right in line right away. It rarely worked that way, not unless they were particularly cruel. She'd never say so to Seifer, but she was at least thankful that he'd gone to somebody like that and not one of the sick bastards that was responsible for the murders.
"Yeah, only human so far. The cattle, as some of the more pleasant ones like to call us," she went on, her expression darkened as the memory of her own mother's gruesome death flashed in her mind. "It's so secret that a lot of the force doesn't seem to give much of a damn about it until it gets to this point. The non-human force anyway. Sure they make a big show about it. Big announcements about bringing this sicko to justice, but in the end it's pretty much Espo and I on this one." She offered her a tired but genuine grin.
"I do it all, you know. Everything from saving kids to breaking up drunken brawls some jackass starts..."
