Jude/Max, Across the Universe
Title: Affection
Characters: Jude/Max
Fandom: Across the Universe
Rating: PG
Table: 25 Dates
Prompt: 1, Affection
Jude Feeny leaned back against the emerald-tinted, newly-cut grass of the university lawn with a sigh. He raised one arm to glance at his watch, frowning slightly. Max was late -- maybe he'd been kept behind after his class. It didn't happen often, as Max tried to sneak out as quickly as he could, but there were days when his professors pounced on him to warn him that skipping class could result in his being kicked out of college, and other things that Max was already fully aware of.
Blah, blah, blah, Jude thought, pulling up a few blades of grass and then tossing them aside restlessly. He always worried when Max showed up late for anything; it wasn't like his boyfriend to do that. The first thing that usually crept into Jude's mind was the thought that Max -- well, didn't want to be with him, and was avoiding him for some reason. Not exactly the most charitable of ideas.
But that was stupid, he told himself fiercely, not realising that he was scowling in the direction of a group of giggly girls walking past him to their next class. The giggles stopped abruptly, and the girls looked away, scowls forming on their own bright, pretty faces. Well, so much for it, thought Jude, amused in spite of himself. It wasn't as though he would ever be interested in any of them, at any rate, so their giggles and simpering wouldn't have any effect on him.
No, he had everything he wanted with Max, thank you very much. No girl could ever appeal to him; he had eyes only for the handsome blond who he'd only met a few days ago, when he'd aided Max in his mad dash to avoid the fraternity members chasing him around the campus. Jude closed his eyes, smiling as he savoured the memory of his first sight of the object of his affection.
There had been something about Max that had attracted Jude from the moment the blond had burst through the door of his basement room, panting and breathless, to fall onto Jude's bed as though he'd belonged there. And the strange thing was -- in Jude's mind, he did belong in that bed. They had since spent too many hours to count in just that place, getting to know each other in a way that would make Max's own fraternity friends blush.
And now there was the question of him going home with Max for Thanksgiving dinner, to meet his family and see the place where his boyfriend had grown up. Jude frowned again, his apprehensions of the upcoming dinner party getting the better of him. What if Max's family didn't like him? What if, god forbid, they could somehow tell just what his relationship with Max was before the two of them made a public statement about it?
What if .....
"Hey! What are you looking so serious about?"
Max threw himself down onto the ground beside Jude, one arm casually slipping around his boyfriend's shoulders in a universal gesture of affection. They weren't overly open about what they were to each other -- not yet. Max didn't seem to care what others thought, but Jude was more circumspect; the last thing he wanted was to have Max dragged into some campus faculty meeting because someone had seen them and drawn their own conclusions.
Jude laughed and shook his head, resisting the impulse to rest his head on Max's shoulder and breathe a sigh of relief that his boyfriend didn't sound anxious or harried; no, he seemed to be his usual carefree, easygoing self. So whatever it was that had made him late seemed to be something that wasn't a cause for concern. "You're exactly --" he checked his watch again, then looked at Max with mock sternness -- "twelve minutes late, Mr. Carrigan."
Max put his hand over his heart, endeavouring to look shocked and widening his blue eyes. "Oh no, late! Does that mean I have to be punished, Mr. Feeny? Spanked, maybe?" A smile spread over his face, his eyes sparkling as he leaned close to Jude and breathed words into his ear that were meant only for his boyfriend's hearing. "I'd prefer to spank you. Now that's an afternoon activity I could get used to doing."
The young Briton raised one eyebrow, trying to look surprised and failing miserably -- the look on his face was more one of anticipation than shock, and he couldn't help smiling, a gesture that ruined the shocked expression once and for all. "Well then, I think you should get on with it." Jude tilted his head to the side and looked up at Max through long, dark lashes. "And just what am I being spanked for, hmmm?"
"For ...." Max let the word trail off, gazing at his boyfriend with a contemplative look. He leaned close to Jude again to whisper in his ear, his lips brushing against Jude's cheek as he did so and eliciting a shiver of pleasure from the other young man. "For being too damn beautiful. For making me want you so bad. For making me feel like bitching at fucking Dr. Meyer for keeping me away from you for one second longer than I had to be. And for stealing my heart, you little thief."
"I only took yours because you'd made off with mine first." Jude laughed again, thrusting out his lower lip in a mock pout. "It sounds like you're going to have to do a lot of spanking if I'm going to be punished for all that. Are you sure we have enough time in the day to get it all done?" His voice was soft, husky, almost a purr; he knew well enough what it did to Max when he spoke in that particular tone of voice.
Max stood up with the grace of a feline, brushing grass from his pants and holding out a hand to his boyfriend. "Well, come on, then. I think we'd better get back to my room and get started on that .... assignment right away. It might take some time to get it finished." His eyes seemed to glow as they ran over Jude's body; Jude almost expected him to lick his lips in a show of anticipation.
Grasping Max's hand, Jude heaved himself up from the grass, brushing grass from his own jeans and instinctively moving closer to Max in the warm sunshine. He knew that they were bound to arouse at least a bit of talk, with the way that they were together all the time, the closeness that obviously existed between them. But so far, they seemed to be safe from any rumours or gossip. So far, so good.
Max threw a companionable arm around Jude's shoulders, and he returned the gesture, walking back towards the dormitories like any other college student who belonged here on this campus. But he didn't belong here -- he'd come to find his father, not find a lover. Somehow, his plans had become derailed, gotten completely turned around. And he didn't mind it a bit. In fact, what was happening in his life now was a lot more pleasant than his original idea of what coming here would be like.
Now, he just had to get through the dinner party with Max's parents. Oh, hell. What if he had to wear a suit? Jude thought, almost wincing at the thought of looking like a penguin for an evening. Well, for Max, he'd deal with it. For Max, he'd deal with anything. What "anything" might entail, he had no idea. But he hoped that it would be at least nominally painless, only a short interlude before they returned to their happy, carefree life. And hopefully, there would be no dressing up.
