I haven’t played X8 yet, but according to the guidebook, there are differences in how the characters run now, as well as jump. Zero’s dash is the fastest, and he was also timed with the fastest kill (with the default weapon). Just from his name, I would have assumed Axl/Accel was the fastest, but he’s the slowest both at running and at killing. This should teach me not to make assumptions!

So if it’s speed you want, in X8 at least, instead of run & gun, it’s dash & slash!

  That...surprises me. Quite a bit! Because while I can't speak for speed at killing (I didn't notice an appreciable difference there), after the time I've spend playing X8, Axl's dash feels far and away the fastest to me, and he seems to cover more ground. Zero's dash feels sluggish as hell and doesn't seem to go so far.

  I can't argue with experience! All I know is what I read. According to the ロックマンX8究極コンプリートガイド, Zero is supposed to cover short distances the fastest of the three. It says one of the advantages of the unlockable Axl Unknown is that his dash speeds up to match Zero's. Of course nothing guarantees Capcom didn't make any last-minute changes or leave in any glitches!
  
  And welcome to the asylum! If I'm lucky, I'll be able to upgrade or replace my (very old) computer later this year, and play X8 for myself. But meanwhile I could use an occasional reality check like your comment!
