Who: Judson and Arc
Where: Some meeting spot around central park
Judson had left Lucy at the tent, telling her not to stray too far and giving her a map of where the tent was just incase she got lost. Central Park was a maze of tents and half of them looked alike, it was easy to get lost if one didn’t know the area well. He was on his way to meet Arc, having sent her a message that he had some things for her to fence if she wished to do so. Not that he had a lot, there were some valuable, a trinket box, comics, and some other items, but his score wasn’t very big. With Lucy living with him now, he had kept close to her.
Getting to their meeting spot, he took a seat and looked up at the sky, towards the high-rise apartments, wondering when authorities would come searching for Lucy.
Arc rolled her shoulder to try ease out the tension. She’d landed harder than she meant to and had ended up sitting on the cracked pavement more than a little stunned for longer than she’d liked, so she ended up taking the more “Responsible” and “easy” way to the meeting spot that Judson had indicated. The hoodie that she was wearing downplayed the quality of her clothes. She was feeling a little self conscious. This was the only nice pair she had, and she wore them for the explicit purpose of not dying while traversing around the city. Vaughn could be a jackass, but there were certain bits to his snaps that held more than a little weight.
“Too early for stargazing,” she quipped and hopped up on the little wall to take a seat.
Judson’s head dropped to turn toward the sound of Arc’s voice. “Not stargazing,” he rolled his eyes. “Just looking towards the sky.” Because that wasn’t weird or crazy at all. He rubbed at his brow and turned more to face Arc. “I don’t have much, this time,” he said with a sigh. “But there is something that can be sold off, and of course you get first dibs,” he chuckled and lifted his bag. “I’ll be able to get a bigger score next time, I have a few places I’ve been watching. How’ve ya been?”
“Eh, nothing much.” She took the bag and settled its weight into her lap and began to look. He was right; there really wasn’t much. She didn’t know who would get this stuff, but… Jeff might. The comics looked interesting. She might read them before fencing them out. “It’s not like you not to have something more than this.” She eyed him out of the corner of her eye, the subtext clear: What’s the what, Judson?. She fished out a cracked hand mirror. She didn’t think it was silver, because otherwise it would’ve been gone a long fucking time ago. There was chipping in the metal that gave that away, and the mirror itself had a delicate spider webbing of cracks along the dingy surface. She knew who might be interested in these things. “Did you open this?” She asked, holding up the trinket box.
“I know,” Judson said, his voice gruff. “Some things have...changed.” Of course, they would change even more if he could get Lucy to let him ransom her off, but not let her go. Fake her death, get the money, live better… That was all anyone wanted, right? To live better? Maybe find a small place that could be all theirs? “Yeah, I opened it. There is some jewelry in there.” He didn’t tell her he’d kept a couple of items from it though, items he’d give to Lucy at some later date. “There are some candle holders in good shape, a couple of picture frames, too...not the best loot, but next time will be better.”
“Changed?” Change was never good among them and she put the trinket box and the mirror back into the bag. She didn’t like the way he said the word and her eyes narrowed a little at him while she tried to puzzle him out.
How did he explain without going into too much detail? He wouldn’t tell her information she could use to sell later, not that she would but he guessed it was a possibility. “Nothing big,” he shrugged. “Just got a girl living with me,” he shot her a smirk. “Been busy.”
She raised an eyebrow at that. That was kinda big, wasn’t it? Judson wasn’t really the type to get into that kind of complication, or, at least that’s what Arc thought. He smirked at her and she wasn’t sure what he was expecting. Gushing? Jealousy? Guys were weird. “I mean… on purpose, or did she just decide to stick around?”
Judson laughed and shrugged his shoulders. “Both?” He didn’t think he had an actually answer for her question. “It just sorta happened,” he said. “It wasn’t planned, I didn’t…” he didn’t think he should tell her that he hadn’t known Lucy until recently. “Anyway, getting things situated and all of that, I haven’t gone out and done much. Next haul will be fucking fantastic, though,” he smiled.
She tilted her head and shrugged in turn. That sounded weird, and maybe a little sketchy to her, but who was she to judge? “You keep promising that and I’m going to start expecting you to seriously deliver.” Judson was a good haul. He usually had some decent things that he’d pawed that kept their business partnership lucrative for the both of them. She didn’t want some distraction getting in the middle of that, not to mention that no way in hell was she going to stick her neck out too far for it either. “Care to share any details on that front?”
“I’ll deliver, don’t you worry,” Judson said confidently. “Oh, hell no,” he answered about details. “I don’t need your ass getting to it before me. But, if you want to go head and put some feelers out, there might be some robotic parts involved.”
Robotic parts? That got an impressed look from Arc, a smile playing across her mouth and she reached up to untie her hair, letting it fall around her face while she gave her scalp a break. She scraped her nails against her head and tried to think. Jayci would be a good one to hit up first on that. “Do you need anything to help on the job?”
“Help? Naw….let me case it some more, see if it’s going to be a huge load,” Judson said, back peddling just a bit. He may need help. “If it’s just a couple of parts, then I can handle it. I like to work alone anyway. But if it might be huge...I’ll take the help.” Plus, it was an area with security and he might could use the help if only with that. “I’m hoping there are more upgrades than actual parts, but I’ll take what I can get.”
She nodded and began braiding her hair back, nimble fingers pulling dark strands of hair into a serviceable braid. She wasn’t offering herself up, but he took it that way and she knew he’d be good on the exchange for it. “I’ve got some who would be good. Maybe even if you’re planning on keeping some of those upgrades for herself.” She heard Vaughn’s angry voice again, and thought of how she was really fucking lucky that her upgrades were done with precision. It annoyed her to a degree. She wasn’t some fucking spoiled and airheaded rich girl. She’d worked her ass off as hard as anyone else and she’d scraped out a life in this city. “So… have you heard anything up with the Casker brothers lately?”
“I’ll let ya know,” Judson said. He knew that if he needed any help, that Arc would find the way to find some people. When Arc asked about the Casker brother’s, he looked at her a bit strangely. “Do I look like someone who knows gossip?” He asked back. He knew of the Casker brothers, but Judson was pretty much a loaner and kept to himself. If they had shit going on, then he didn’t know about it. “What are they up to?” He finally asked. If she was asking him questions, then maybe there was some shit he needed to know.
She shook her head with her hands occupied tying off her hair. “Nah, nothing you need to worry about. I ran into him the other night,” looking like he’d been run over by a giant truck but also really fucking sad but adorable at the same time and what the fuck am I thinking? She trailed off uncomfortably and palmed her face. “I just didn’t know if there was a bigger knock-down/drag out around here. You know. Assholes who like to jump people. That sorta thing.” Is he okay? Should I message him? Oh my fuck stop.
Judson narrowed his eyes and looked at her. Interesting, he thought. He wasn’t sure what to make of it, but she was definitely fishing for information. “I don’t know,” he shrugged. “I stay out of people’s way, they stay out of mine,” and he’d had his own stuff to deal with that was for sure. “But if I hear anything, I’ll let you know.” Which he probably wouldn’t hear anything, but one never knew.
Now he was giving her that look and she matched it back to him. She didn’t handle the whole thing smoothly. Arc knew that and she was feeling that prickle along the back of her neck. It was a rookie move and she’d fumbled it. “Well, keep me posted on that job, and I’ll ping you when I get trades for these.” She looked over into the direction of the reservoir where her first buyer might be. “Oh, and uh, careful of that girl, huh? Don’t want her stealing all that shit you call moonshine.” She grinned at him, adding on a cheeky wink.
Judson lifted an eyebrow and then gave a nod. “You’ll be the first to know anything,” he told her and then looked out towards where she looked and then took a good look around before looking over at Arc once more. “Yeah, pretty sure she doesn’t quite like my moonshine,” he chuckled. “And hey, one day, that shit is going to be fantastic. You wait and see.”
She shouldered the bag, both of them knowing she’d return it with the trades she’d make on his behalf. “Oh, yeah, totally. Sure thing. Soon you’ll start… what is it? Franchising or something?” She laughed and shook her head. “I’ll see you around.”
“Something like that,” Judson said, hopping down from his seat. “See ya!”
