RP: The First Reading
Who: Cast & Crew of By the Grace of St. Mungo
What: The first reading of the pilot.
When: 08/07/27; morning.
Where: WeeVee Productions Offices; Scotland
Warnings: None
Completion Status: Ongoing

Bennie was nervous. She had only ever done theater and what were they thinking in not only casting her but as the lead? Would she measure up? To make herself feel better, she stopped by Melinda's coffee shop at Sweet Nothings and got herself a mocha with two extra shots of espresso - Melinda gave it to her on the house to wish her luck on her face day. She shoved extra coins in the tip jar to make up for it. She then went to the Ministry for her Portkey to Scotland, a full half hour early. She wasn't sure if she'd even be allowed into the building this early, but was grateful when she arrived to be welcomed into the waiting room in the front lounge at the first floor of the building. She sat and tapped her foot with nerves, sipping at her paper coffee cup as she did.

Jeremy hadn't really slept the last few nights and the 12 oz coffee had in his hand was straight espresso. He had to admit that moving, bartending, and being cast in a show made him a bit queazy but that could also be the espresso.

He arrived at the building in plenty of time but as he approached the receptionist she looked at him as if he had wandered in off the streets. "Jeremy Evans. I'm here for the table reading." He watched her look down a ledger before pointing him towards the elevator.

"Third floor. The conference room at the end of the hall."

Jeremy toasted his coffee on his way to the elevator.

Bennie & Jeremy (Before the Reading)

When Bennie saw a familiar face - thank goodness - headed past her towards the lifts, she nearly jumped from her seat, "Jeremy!" she called after him, making sure not to spill her sugary monstrosity of a caffeinated lifeline.

She caught up with him just by the elevators bank and smiled, "I'm ridiculously happy to see you're the first one here," well, second, but still.

"I'm glad I'm not the only one that needed the extra boost." Jeremy pointed to her coffee with his own. He wasn't sure whether or not just to walk in or wait to be summoned. "So, are you ready for this?" He took a long drag off his coffee, bitter and black.

The lift dinged and she stepped in, looking over her shoulder to see him - thankfully - following, "What floor did she say? She just told me to wait," she said with a laugh, "and yes, caffeine is life; I've spent the last few months working at a cafe so sometimes, I've meant that literally." It wasn't like she needed to work to keep a roof over her head, she was living with her family after all, but she had wanted to contribute to the household in any way she could.

"And no. I am not. In any way. You?" She asked - she knew he had acted, or she thought she remembered that, anyway, but she wasn't sure if he'd done anything this big before.

Just then, they reached the third floor and the doors opened to a long hallway with a large, open air conference room at the end. Inside it, she could see Silviya Capper seated elegantly next to tv heartthrob (and her new co-boss she figured) Robert Hilliard. Oh gods, this was going to be insane. She felt woefully underdressed.

She was pretty sure she hadn't been seen yet and so she stopped dead and moved to the left of the elevators bank, out of the line of sight of the conference room, and took a deep breath.

"Eh, the coffee helps. This is probably the biggest thing I've ever done. I was a bartender last month." He let a chuckle slip out as they moved toward the conference room.

Jeremy stopped moving towards the room noticing that Bennie had ducked into a recessed space along the corridor. He didn't speak, but followed her waiting for her to collect herself.

He wasn't much better underneath his travel cloak. His shirt probably cam down too low cut but he had hoped the pinstripe suit coat and pants would elevate it enough. He'd have to sift through some choice comments to know where to go next.

"Barista," she said with an anxious laugh, raising her free hand pathetically. Her breathing was coming fast and hard, and she felt nearly on a verge of a panic attack. Acting had never made her nervous before - what the hell was going on? When she noticed he followed her, she looked up at him and tried to focus only on his friendly, easy-going face. "Sorry," she said, for seemingly no reason, out of nowhere. She just... didn't know if she could do this.

"I don't know..." the words didn't come out though. She closed her eyes. "I'm trying to remember my first opening night as a lead, the rush, you know? How do you do? Deal with nerves?" She asked the last bit quietly, as if she didn't want to admit out loud that she was nervous and drowning.

The question caught him off guard. "It's more of an acknowledgement of a point of no return. I know I can't do anything about the first impression now, but I can improve every proceeding meeting."

He hoped this helped. Bennie was much more of a perfectionist than he was and even in school she held herself to her highest expectations.

She nodded, taking another deep breath and looking again into his face. Turns out this would become a coping mechanism for her going forward.

"Well then, are we ready?" She asked, so glad she had him there with her, even if she didn't know him all that well other than from their school years. She straightened up, deciding if she was going to underdressed, at least she'd be confident about it. It was then that she walked tall down the corridor to meet her new bosses, her colleagues, and her fate.

Wes & Kenzie, before the reading
[info]itsjustwes
2021-08-07 04:14 pm UTC (link)
Making the decision to go into acting had been something of a whim, if Wes were being completely honest. He wasn't bored with making music, by any means, but he had felt in something of a rut for his solo music this year. Perhaps it was because he'd been collaborating more these days, but he'd been positively itching for something new and different. He'd mentioned it to his manager, who had then looked into the possibilities of ventures he could pursue, and she'd come back to him with the new show WeeVee was planning. He'd arranged a meeting with the writer and the EP, given an informal audition, and been cast even before open casting had been scheduled.

The hardest part these past few months had been not talking about it, though he'd hinted at a new project. Everyone, of course, had assumed it had to do with his new album, and he'd let them. But now he'd been officially announced as part of the cast of By the Grace of St. Mungo, and what fun he planned to have with this project.

He'd arrived about fifteen minutes early, taking some of that time to chat quietly with Robert Hilliard, his castmate and EP, though he was quite distracted when he saw the queen with wild curls enter the room, looking star-struck and just a bit out of place, as though she couldn't quite believe she'd got the part. And from the afternoon he'd spent with her, that didn't surprise him.

Excusing himself from his conversation with Robert, Wes crossed to Kenzie, one hand lifting presumptuously to wrap a strand of curls around his finger and give a little tug. "Fancy seeing you here," he teased, dark eyes gleaming in the shared knowledge of their activities.

It was her first table read, the excitement and nerves were so overwhelming that Kenzie had forgotten all about Wes. Of course, it went without question that she had noticed his name in the release. He was going to be on the same show that she had just been hired to. The fact that he would be at the table read today as well had completely slipped her mind.

Now he was the first person to greet her, causing those chocolate orbs to nearly pop out of her head. Why had they hired her? She understood Bennie, the woman was stunning. Kenzie felt very average with no talent as she felt Wes tug at one of her curls. One booted foot nervously kicked her heel against the ground. “I-I saw you at the gala,” she blurted out, those nerves that she had been able to smoke away before their first encounter were overwhelming in that moment, she wanted to kick herself.

She had worn one of her favorite outfits (sans tights), even though she felt incredibly under dressed, so that she at least felt comfortable for the table read. Her hope was that she would get points for arriving as herself, because she wasn’t certain she’d have been able to speak if she had arrived in that overly fancy outfit her mother had thought she ought to wear.

Kenzie's response to his presence amused Wes greatly, and he gave that curl another tug. "Ahh, I didn't know you attended the gala. If I'd know you would be there, I'd have made sure to steal you away for a dance. Or a smoke. Maybe both," he quipped, waggling his brows at her, hoping he might be able to get a laugh from her, maybe even get her to relax a little bit.

That second tug made things low in her stomach tense, the memory of the last time he'd tugged her hair and how much more intimate that had been was flooding her senses. She actually flushed when he mentioned a smoke, earning that laugh he had hoped for. "Funny story, my father caught me smoking at the gala, only after I scared one of my old professors," she admitted, feeling herself relax as she spoke with Wes. He had the strangest affect on her.

Ahh, there it was, that little laugh, the way she seemed to relax in some ways while tensing in others--would that sort of reaction ever cease to thrill him? He hoped not. He wanted to ask if her father had bent her over his knee in punishment for catching her smoking, but this was not the time or place for that sort of conversation. There wasn't much time before the reading would begin, after all. "Scared an old professor, hmm?" he prompted instead, definitely curious about how she'd done that and to whom.

Mischief sparkled in her eyes as she met his gaze, nodding her head. "I maybe flirted with him to see what would happen. He got my name wrong," she said, nose scrunching up as she remembered being called Mackenzie. It happened often, it would keep happening, and she'd keep making that face. Why did people always assume there was more to a name?

"He did let me know I was being very inappropriate," she said the last with a smirk, her heart racing as if she had said something to actually flirt with Wes. She was definitely too.. Something for that to happen. They were supposed to be sitting down for this reading soon, weren't they?

Wes chuckled warmly when she explained what she'd done to her old professor. "Well, he deserved what he got then, didn't he?" He couldn't imagine being a teacher--how tedious life would be!--though he had to think he would be terrible at it because if a gorgeous, legal, ex-student of his flirted with him, he probably wouldn't tell them they were being inappropriate.

Yeah, he definitely wouldn't last long as a professor. Good thing he was more obsessed with the arts.

"You want to smoke a blunt with me when we're done here?" he offered, certain she'd be down for it.

She gave him a cheeky smile at his question, glad he seemed to agree with her as well. She had rather enjoyed being so bold, she wondered if she might get the itch to be bold again soon.

Then the opportunity seemed to present itself, Wes wanted her to smoke with her when they were done? Kenzie's head bobbed quickly in a nod, biting her lower lip for just a second. "Only if you promise to tug at my hair again," came out in a rush, her cheeks just a touch flushed. She was turning over a new leaf, she was an actress, maybe she could be bold.

Ducking his head and bringing his lips near her ear, he murmured, "I'll do more than tug it." His voice was thick with promise, and his fingers did give her curls another tug. He couldn't deny that he would enjoy getting her naked again, though with her, he realized it was less about the sex and more about the camaraderie of having someone to smoke and laugh with. That didn't mean he wouldn't sleep with her again, as he was generally a very sexual person, but he was almost surprised how much he wanted to simply hang out with her again.

His words gave her goosebumps, but her boldness had been rewarded. That last tug he gave her hair made her let out a soft gasp, swallowing the lump that was suddenly in her throat.

The nerves won out, and she took a step back, motioning towards the seats. "Do you know where your seat is?" she asked, hoping then that her seat was near his. While it was going to be nerve wracking to have him there, it was comforting to have a familiar face in the crowd.

"I believe we're across the table from one another," he answered, straightening his back and releasing her hair. He glanced around, noticing that it seemed everyone was present and getting to their seats. "Shall we do the read?" he suggested, his hand pressing gently against her lower back to guide her to her chair before going around the table to his. The table was wide enough that he wouldn't be able to nudge her foot with his, but he could catch her eye if he were so inclined.

As it was, Wes was serious about this new venture, and it showed in the way he read his character, Healer Logan Shepherd.

The Reading [Complete]
[info]silviyacapper
2021-08-07 05:42 pm UTC (link)
Once the full group was gathered - all on time to Silvie's delight - she cleared her throat and welcomed them all and handed out the scripts. Robert as Hospital Head Healer Chris Webber began:
Each of you comes here today hopeful, wanting in on the game. Today, you are Healers. The seven years you spend here as a Healing resident will be the best and worst of your life. You will be pushed to the breaking point. Look around you. Say hello to your competition. Eight of you will switch to an easier specialty. Five of you will crack under the pressure. Two of you will be asked to leave. This is your starting line. This is your arena. How well you play... That's up to you.

Benita, seated next to the other American, Jeremy, finished the reading with lines Silvie had written and refused to allow anyone to edit.
I can't think of any one reason why I want to be a Healer, but I can think of a thousand reasons why I should quit. They make it hard on purpose. There are lives in our hands. There comes a moment when it's more than just a game, and you either take that step forward or turn around and walk away. I could quit but here's the thing, I love the playing field.
She delivered the lines with such a perfect balance of vulnerability and fierce determination that Silviya felt a shiver go down her body - they had made the right choice. Bennie wasn't a name, she wasn't experience in television or film projects at all, but she was Grace. It was just as Silvie had hoped. It would be a hit, she knew it. She nudged Robert's leg under the table with a conspiratorial smile - they had a hit on their hands.

"Thank you all for coming today, I'm unbelievably excited to have you and to take this journey together. We'll start filming tomorrow at six am sharp, so please be a little early. After filming wraps in the evening, you'll each meet with our production team regarding the legal and professional aspects of your new contracts. Please feel free to enjoy tea here and get to know each other a bit, the conference room is yours - ours - for the rest of today if you'd like." She stood and made her way over to Bennie for a quick, encouraging word, before going to make herself a hot tea a the little lunch bar WeeVee had set up.

Beau and open (after the reading)
[info]beaurosier
2021-08-07 06:15 pm UTC (link)
For his sins, Beaumont Rosier had been acting since childhood, starting by entertaining his parents and baby sister at home, then being cast in WeeVee's first soap opera when he was barely eight. By the time he started Hogwarts and switched his stage name to Beau Rosemont he was recognised when they went out to places like Diagon Alley.

So he wasn't really surprised that he was one of the more established actors in the cast. Thanks to his agent, he hadn't gone down the open audition route, but he had been asked to do chemistry reads with the final few candidates for the Yang role, which boded well for getting some good storylines.

He poured himself a coffee and added a large splash of oat milk while he eyed up the snacks that had been provided. "Hey," he said as someone came up beside him to get a drink. "How was that for you?"

Bennie laughed, "It was a lot, if I'm honest," she looked up - and up, she was so short in this room! - to see Beau smiling at her, friendly. "You're Beau," she said, remembering his name more from his impressive resume than his introduction at the beginning of the roundtable. "How'd you like it? I'm sure you're used to this sort of thing," she was certainly not used to this. At all. She'd done table reads for countless plays and musicals, but never for something this expansive. She brought her now cold mocha to her lips and then gave him a toothy, all nerves smile.

"The first day can be like that," Beau agreed with a smile. The script had been pretty intense too, so he could see why they'd only done one episode today. "You're right, though. I've done a few of these." It was still a relief to be getting back to a regular role - he liked variety but it was always nice to have a steady pay cheque.

She was going to be carrying a lot of weight on those slim shoulders, he thought, picking up a cookie that was conveniently labelled as vegan. The icing was the same green as robes that Healers wore and there was a delicate crossed bone and wand design piped on top.

"I've never played a Healer before, though," he admitted. "I think some of those medical terms are going to be a challenge."

She sighed and joked, "Oh my goodness yes, maybe they'll have a dialect coach for us or something!" She was well aware that she was one of only two 'American' accents in the room, though in the Wizarding World that wasn't too strange, to have Magicks of all origins working together. She was sure her father would have some advice, too, being the American Consultant to the Aurors office in London.

"What made you audition?" She asked, unsure how the process had gone for anyone who wasn't a nobody who just showed up to the open casting call.

"Apparently I'm too young to retire to the countryside and raise a herd of hippogriffs," Beau joked.

He took a sip of his coffee, mulling over his answer. "It was the best script I'd read for a long time." Since he'd done the reality dancing show last autumn, most things that had come his way had been a little too light and fluffy, as though he hadn't spent three years playing a very serious young Auror. He'd wanted something with a little more emotional depth, and then the Grace script had ended up in his hands.

"I'd say don't be nervous, but even I get jitters before a new project and I've been doing this for twenty years."

Bennie couldn't help her loud laugh at that line, "You'd be depriving the world if you did, but if you wanted to, why not?" Surely she assumed he could afford it. Why would anyone ever want to stop performing, though?

"Twenty years. Goodness. I'm woefully inexperienced here, aren't I?" She leaned in conspiratorially, "I still have no idea why they chose me, especially to play Grace herself."

"I like creating too much, I don't think I could ever fully stop." Maybe he would branch out into directing or producing, but for now he preferred being in front of the camera. Besides, once he paid for things like his agent, publicist, stylist, personal trainer, union fees... well, the retirement fund would need some more work.

Beau grinned and leant in to meet her. "And I still have no idea what I'm doing - I just make it up as I go along." He winked. "Here, I'll give you my phone number." Beau put the cookie he was holding in his mouth so that he could retrieve his phone from his pocket.

Her sigh of relief was almost too relieved and she happily nodded, "Thank you," if he was willing to help her through her nerves, well, at least she wouldn't have to lean on Jeremy's familiarity too often. Wouldn't have to make a total bother of herself. She recited her number to him once he'd gotten his phone out and then grinned when he texted her so that they had each other's contact information.

"I appreciate it, honestly everyone's been really supportive." And it was the truth. Silvie had given her shoulder an encouraging squeeze after the reading had ended and had leaned in to say in her ear that was brilliant, thank you, Grace. She was surprised, no one had asked her about her acting background, then again, maybe they thought she had none.

"Just remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question." He put his phone away, wondering whether a group chat would be a good idea. "And we're all going to be seeing a lot of each other.
