Beau rubbed his hand over the back of his neck, hair freshly shorn into the familiar neat style that he wore as Healer Jayden Burke. He'd waited until the last minute to get it cut, holding onto some personal expression as long as he could. Though he'd been an actor most of his life, for some reason giving up control of his appearance had been most difficult with this role. Whether it was the increased frequency of seasons or because it all coincided with living as his authentic self, he still couldn't decide. At this rate, he worried he'd burn out in a couple of years.

Luckily, he'd surrounded himself with people who reminded him he was more than just an actor.

"First table read's on Monday," he said, placing a perfectly-formed pumpkin on the table in front of Scarlett. He wasn't entirely sure that the combination of sharp implements and wine was the best idea but time would tell. "Think we'll see you on set more this time?"

As the pumpkin was plopped down on the table in front of her, Scarlett stood up just enough to reconfigure her legs, twisting them under her like a pretzel. When she settled back down, she lifted her wineglass for a sip. "Ooh, right! You should. Kenz and I are good." Though that may be in part because the girls simply didn't talk about Aldrich. She wasn't even sure if Kenzie knew that she and Aldrich had... a thing.

A thing that she was quite proud of him for still being okay with not defining. She truly hadn't thought him capable of it, and she still worried he would resent her for keeping him from finding his one true love for the happy little family she knew he wanted someday. She just kept reminding herself that she'd made him promise he'd bounce if wanting it became more than wanting her.

"It seems like the show's really taking off. Think you'll want to stick with it for as long as they'll have you?" she asked. She had plenty of opinions about the show and how terrible the pairings were, but she tended to save those for her friends who weren't in the show.

"Good. I've missed seeing you around." It was never a bad surprise to find her hanging out in his trailer when he finished a scene.

He took a moment to settle himself and study his own pumpkin, trying to decide what he might attempt to carve. Scarlett's question drew a dry laugh out of him, though. "That's a complicated one. My last big job before this was Lux. Four seasons over four years. Now we're heading into season three barely a year after we started." His biggest question was whether a schedule like this was sustainable for anybody and he was especially concerned for his colleagues who were new to the business.

Beau shrugged. He'd had to turn down other jobs due to his contract with Grace. "Silviya's made noises about storylines for Burke and Kaitlyn, but I guess we'll see how that plays out."

Scarlett supposed she should make more of an effort to drop in on him. Even though they hadn't slept together since early on in their friendship, popping in on him unannounced was still one of her favorite things. She didn't even mind not sleeping with him. Beau had become one of her favorite people, and she fully intended to keep him forever. Thankfully, his boyfriend didn't seem to mind.

"Burke and Kaitlyn?" she asked, not doing a very good job of keeping her opinion on that to herself. She just couldn't see it. They were woefully mismatched. "Ugh, well, I'm glad I didn't end up getting a part. I probably would have gotten bored of the role and bailed on the project, leaving them scrambling to fill in the plot holes my absence caused." Because obviously they wouldn't be able to recast the character; no one would have been able to fill her shoes!

Beau chuckled at the way she said the characters' names. He couldn't really say that he disagreed. The pair were both driven and ambitious, and Lynn was a delight to play against, but he couldn't really see the two characters having a happily ever after without some major character assassination. "I really don't see them being endgame," he admitted.

He hummed as he picked up a pen to try and mark out the design he wanted on his pumpkin. Scarlett's ego really was a beautiful thing to behold; she never failed to amaze him. "They'd have cancelled the whole show if you left," Beau corrected with a grin.

There was a small measure of relief that he agreed with her opinion. With most people, she couldn't be arsed to care if she offended them, but Beau was different. From that very first meeting, he'd been different. He was long-term best friend material, and despite her impulsivity, she didn't actually want to fuck that up. "Oh good! I mean, I guess we'll see what Silvie wants to do with them, but please no."

Though it made her wonder if they might consider writing a gay line for him at some point, and even if they wanted to, would that be something he would be comfortable with now that he was out? Now didn't seem the time to ask, so she filed the thought away.

Scarlett chuckled at that. "I know you're teasing me, but we're going to go with that's exactly what they'd have had to do!" she joked as she reached out for her pumpkin, turning it to try to decide on which part she wanted to start.

Opting for a traditional scary face design for him pumpkin, Beau decided to start by finding the right spot for the eyes. He frowned slightly as he tried to sketch out the shape he wanted with a marker.

"Hey, just say the word and I'll get you a spot as an extra." The most extra supporting artist of all time. "I bet you'd make a great coma patient," he teased. He was sure he'd made the offer before but he also knew that she wasn't bored out of her skull at work anymore.

"You know," Beau said, "you've seemed happier since working at the Bazaar. Everything still going okay there?"

It might be fun to be an extra for just one episode, but she wasn't sure she cared enough to bother. She'd have to think about it. His teasing pulled her from the thought, though, and she narrowed her eyes at him. "Brat," she accused lightly. A coma patient! Pfft, that would be a waste of her talents!

Sliding her wand out, she started magically carving a hole around the top of her pumpkin, still not sure what sort of design she would do but knowing getting the guts out would be the first step either way.

"Hmm, I have been, haven't I?" she said with a mischievous grin. "Though honestly, it's probably because I don't actually work in the shop much. Just when Penny needs an extra hand with specific things." Her actual work, serving at the games Penny hosted, was continuing to prove to be quite lucrative. And the high rollers changed often enough to keep things interesting. And she did so enjoy the money.

Beau laughed, knowing full well that he was being a brat with that comment. He just had to tease a little further, though. "A modern-day sleeping beauty." There was a kernel of an idea in that description, but he wasn't sure what it might grow into. A painting? Something else? Beau filed it away to contemplate later.

"Good," he said warmly. A job where she didn't have to do much of the official job description? Yes, that sounded like the ideal role for Scarlett. He sipped his wine, in no rush to start gutting his pumpkin. "I'm glad things have worked out for you. Much better than the day spa."

Scarlett sighed a bit wistfully when he continued the joke. "I really am Princess material, aren't I?" she posed, purposefully taking his teasing in a different direction. And as far as princesses went, Sleeping Beauty wasn't the worst, though she could do with less of the seeking a Prince obsession.

"Mmm, right! I can't believe it's been over a year since I walked out of that place so you could get me naked," she said, wiggling her brows at him. It wasn't a come-on. She had no desire to get between him and Nate. Figuratively, anyway. She had a feeling she would quite enjoy being between them physically if Nate were interested in that sort of thing. Then again, she wasn't sure Beau was into sharing either. Besides, she had plenty of other people she could enjoy, people who weren't in relationships that were too disgustingly sweet.

That memory brought forth a bark of laughter from Beau. "Ah, fuck. We missed the anniversary." He shook his head in amusement. "But, alas, I'm spoken for this year."

There was another anniversary on the horizon. Not with Nate - that had taken a little longer - but it had been nearly a year since he'd come out. Nearly a year since he'd spoken to his parents. That thought hit him like a punch to the gut and he took another drink of wine.

"I think the only time I'll be getting you naed these days is if I want to paint you." Maybe that was where his modern fairytale idea was taking him?

Sighing dramatically, Scarlett lifted a hand to press the back of her wrist to her forehead. "For shame! However shall I survive?" she lamented, managing to hold the pose for a few seconds before breaking character with a little laugh.

"You know I don't mind, Dimples. I'm happy for you and loverboy," she reminded him. Sure, the sex had been great, but that was the perk of her not wanting anything serious with anyone. She could always find someone with whom the sex was great. And things with Aldrich were going fairly steady in that department. He hadn't told her he loved her since she agreed to being with him on the regular, anyway, and so she was content to keep sleeping with him.

"And you know I'm always happy to pose naked for you," she added, almost as an afterthought as she summoned a bowl to put the pumpkin guts in. Thank the gods for magic! She'd hated scooping out the guts the couple times she'd done it as a child.

It really was a pity that someone as dramatic as Scarlett wasn't good at actual acting, Beau thought. But the world's loss was his gain.

"Nate is..." Beau exhaled. "I didn't know I could be happy like this." They'd recently celebrated Nate's birthday the way they'd wished they could a year ago. "And I know you hate the mushy stuff, Sweetcheeks," he added, waggling his pen at her, "but I appreciate it." Found family was more important than ever.

He picked up his wand, separating the pumpkin seeds from the rest of Scarlett's gunk so that he could roast them later.

When he added that teasing bit toward her, Scarlett made exaggerated gagging sounds before smiling at him. "Aw, come on, Dimples, just because I don't want it for myself doesn't mean I hate it for others. I grew up with the best example of mushy in love stuff. If I was into monogamy and all that, I'd totally want what my parents have."

She shrugged, as if it really wasn't a big deal that she simply wasn't built for that kind of epic love. And it wouldn't be if society as a whole would just realize that not everyone wanted to go the nuclear family route.

Distracted by the pumpkin seeds separating themselves from the pumpkin guts, Scarlett grinned. "Do you do anything special with the seeds when you roast them?" she asked.

"I haven't thought that far ahead," Beau admitted as the seeds unravelled from the stringiest part of the pumpkin guts. "I think I might just chuck some spices on and hope for the best." He had accumulated a fairly decent collection of spices over the years as he experimented with different vegan recipes.

"I guess that's my general approach to cooking. Just touch wood and hope it turns out edible in the end."
