The 2nd Annual Literacy Flourishes Charity Gala
Schedule of Events
  • 6:00 Welcome
  • 6:30 Dinner
  • 7:00 Orchestra/Dancing
  • 7:30 Book Signing
  • 8:30 Concert/Dancing

Welcome

At promptly 6 o'clock, Pansy Nott takes the stage to welcome all attendees. She goes over the schedule for the evening and explains the mission of the chairty, as well as what the charity has done with funds raised at last year's gala.

After finishing her speech, the orchestra strikes up, and Pansy encourages mingling before dinner is served.

Dinner

A four course meal appears intermittently over the half hour. When guests arrive, they select certain specifications on a card at their placesetting, including for vegetarian and/or vegan options and allergies.

Formal Dancing

As the last course--dessert--is served, the orchestra shifts to music more encouraging of formal dancing, allowing those who took the lessons to show off their period-inspired moves. The music is a blend of authentic period music and modern music stylized in different periods.
  • Suraya Issawi
  • Author of three highly successful novels which explore family and relationships through multi-generational stories. Her books span over a thousand years of history and multiple countries, family drama, friendships and how some things never change.

  • Erin Harris
  • Medieval author whose series of novels chronicling the Hogwarts' founders lives and loves caused a ripple of controversy through historian circles, with much debate over the historical accuracy and dramatic license Harris took.

  • Ikenna Jaimeson
  • Ikenna is an author of Nigerian and British descent, acclaimed for his rich descriptions which seem to spring life off the page in a riot of colour and sound. His recently published second novel, The Deepening Beat, explores the rich landscape of multicultural life in Victorian Britain and the early years of Colonial Nigeria, exploring the realities of both muggle industrialisation's affect on Wizarding Britain and the changing landscape of Igbo life in Nigeria with the coming of white rule.

  • C. T. Carrington
  • Author of a dozen Regency and Victorian era romance novels that stay true to the human experience and explore the socio-economic impact on relationships of all sorts. Although not present, C.T. Carrington has sent their agent to sell pre-signed, authenticated books to benefit the charity.

Book Signing

At half past seven, although the orchestra continues, Pansy annouces that the guest authors are set up and ready for the meet and greet book signings. If guests did not bring their own book to be signed, there are books available for purchase, with proceeds to the charity. There is no extra charge for a signature, though the authors each set their own standards for anything extra, like photographs.
  • Cade Dupree
  • Author of the wildly popular Rowland Hazard series, set in the late Victorian era and featuring the clever servant of a detective who solves the mysteries while the detective gets all the credit.

  • Nadia Makavana
  • As the first in her family born outside her homeland of India, Nadia brings rich culture to her historical romance novels, which often focus on arranged political marriages and how the most unexpected people can impact a nation. Nadia is notorious for unexpected, messy endings, insisting that life doesn't always tie things up in neat bows, so why should her books?

  • Lesley Wells
  • A self-described science-fiction and history nerd, Lesley Wells has an affinity for writing time travel novels in which the protagonists have no way home and must live out their lives in the past, often entrenching themselves in the political upheaval of the time and unapologetically including racially and sexually diverse characters.

  • Tashiro Akimi
  • Adopted at age five from Japan, Tashiro experienced a near-complete cultural erasure. Upon coming of age, they went on a journey to the country of their birth, reconnecting with their culture and drawing inspiration for a series of novels which explore the purity of Japanese culture while the country was cut off from the rest of the world. Although written in Japanese, Tashiro translated the novels to English, and they've received something of a cult following.

Concert

At half past 8, the book signing ends, and Pansy announces the start of the concert. The Purple Pixies kick off the event, though showcases also include performances by Violet Nott, Wes Carlisle, and Coira Montague. The gala officially ends at ten o'clock, but the concert continues until midnight.

Book signing: Dagny and OPEN

For Dagny, there was no question that her attire for the gala would be something fitting for the theme. Since the lords and ladies ball was Pansy’s brainchild, there was a bit of gentle pressure for the family to look good. Dagny didn’t mind in the slightest, rather enjoying the opportunity to pull out all the stops for the gala. Bennie had helped her decide on the dress she would wear, and Dagny didn’t feel like she was playing dress-up or like her outfit was too close to something bridal as some of the plainer, cream-coloured gowns she had tried on were.

Addison was, as always, great company but Dagny could tell she was dying to go and put her camera to good use. Dagny encouraged her to go and put her talents to good use, contemplating joining one of the queues for a book signing; she generally preferred true crime to crime fiction, but she’d read and enjoyed Cade Dupree’s Rowland Hazard series. She’d even re-read the first novel recently after rumours had started popping up that WeeVee had purchased the rights for an adaptation.

She paused to check her phone when it chirped from inside the small reticule she had brought for the evening. The bag was, of course, charmed to hold far more than the eye could see, for Dagny was not really one to travel lightly - if someone ever needed anything, there was a chance she’d have it in her purse. There was a message from her dad; Dagny had sent her parents a picture of herself and Thad in their outfits for the gala and he’d texted back wishing them a good night out. The message made her smile and she sent back a quick heart emoji as she joined the end of the line before slipping the phone back into her bag.

Combining a charity event supporting reading and literature with a chance to meet some actual authors had been something like catnip to Frank's recent decision to lean into an attitude of treating themself. It had lead to the buying of the suit they wore, although the shirt and waistcoat were hires so something more modern could be used for a later date. They were thankful that Molly had pointed them at a tailor friend with a little more experience who could help them with the pile of inspiration photos they had found.

Now they were standing in the signing area not sure which line to choose since they had read books by a couple of the authors and brought them for signing, but were also incredibly intrigued by another and wanted to skim a sample before buying. Plus frankly they wanted to enthuse about another person using they/them pronouns, but that line was huge.

"How am I meant to choose which line when if I haven't already read them I basically want to?" they asked the person by them who also seemed to be dithering. They adjusted the violet in their lapel slightly and shifted from foot to foot.

Dagny's lips curved into an amused smile. "I'm just going with the one that I've actually read," she admitted conspiratorially. A couple of the author profiles had caught her attention earlier and if she didn't buy any books tonight she might well end up stopping by Flourish and Blotts in the near future.

"Maybe pick the one with the shortest line?" she suggested. "Or toss a coin?"

The accent came as a bit of a surprise and Frank almost missed the first few words, but responded with a groan and a slight facepalm instead. "I've read read Issawi, Jaimeson and Dupree already and I've been trying to make time for Wells for ages," they explained and sighed. "You know, I'd say I need to read less but I don't want Mrs Nott to overhear me and I'm not going to give up anyway."

They looked between the lines with a longing pause at the huge crowd Tashiro Akimi appeared to be gathering. "I should prioritise the ones I brought to get signed, I guess," they said and summoned their cloak carefully over the heads of all the people. They had had it temporarily altered to make it fit with their clothing, but kept it for the handily huge pockets. Sticking their hand inside they retrieved a small stack of books tied with a piece of string.

They tried to look down in their usual awkward way and were thwarted by the extremely high collar of their shirt and made a little gulping noise. "Did your dress take some getting used to?" they asked, running a finger between their neck and collar in a futile attempt to loosen it.

"Wells' books do sound interesting," Dagny agreed. Those were the books she was most tempted by. Though she had only browsed a few blurbs, as someone who had grown up between two countries there was a certain appeal about characters being dropped into a culture that wasn't their own. "And I think Mrs Nott is fan of Carrington." The author wasn't here at the gala, but Dagny had definitely seen copies of their books at the Nott manor.

Dagny glanced down at herself. "A little, yeah," she admitted. "Not really my normal style." There was a lot more fabric than she usually wore and the dress wasn't a cut she'd typically choose either. "But I think that's part of the fun of it all."

Not wanting to offend the hostess Frank refrained from outright looks of distaste but they made a little humming noise. "I don't read a lot of pure romance books," they admitted. "Carrington sounds decent, but I'm not sure I can be bothered with hetero romance very often anymore, I did plenty until the last year or two." It wasn't that they disliked hetero romance, it was just having opened themself up to other possibilities those were far more intriguing of late.

"Oh, yeah I'm not knocking it," they said, "but it's taking some getting used to, and I'm wishing I picked a different collar." They looked down at Dagny's dress and slowly started to frown. "Is it weird that your dress is reminding me of mesh shirts because of the over layer?" Then Frank realised that they didn't really know this person at all and startled slightly. "I am so sorry, brain ran away with me there," they said, suddenly sounding formal and unwittingly like their mother, which caused a huge internal wince that slightly twitched their face.

"Me neither," Dagny confessed with a grin. "I'm more into true crime, but..." She gestured around. "When in Rome." Even if she wasn't Thad's mum Dagny thought she would have enjoyed Pansy's company so she really didn't mind having something else to add to their family brunch conversations.

The corner of her mouth turned down as she saw Frank touch their collar again. "You do look a little uncomfortable," she agreed gently. "If it's itchy, I think I have a soothing salve on me?" It was one of Uncle Adrian's products. Frank's question caught her off guard and she laughed. "Maybe a little weird? But the over layer is what caught my attention in the first place."

"Oh! I have to admit that's also not my thing," Frank replied. "I like history, despite the terrible teacher, but I like it when the romance isn't the main point of the book." Then they paused and squinted. "Umm, in case you didn't know, Hogwarts' History of Magic teacher is a ghost who is super stuck in his ways, since I'm guessing you went to Ilvermorny from your accent."

Frank sighed and took their hand away from their neck. "Thanks, but it's not itchy it's kind of pokey," they explained. "Super stiff and far higher than anything I'm used to. I'm hoping people will relax a bit when we get to the concert and I can remove it." The buttons which held the collar in place were hidden but easily accessible.

They nodded in agreement. "You look lovely, and it's definitely more interesting than most of the regency things I first saw when I was trying to decide on an era and gown versus suit." There were certainly options around in what seemed to be a regency style which were more interesting than Frank had spotted.

Dagny's tastes ran a little macabre, she knew, but she'd picked up the interest when she was working in New York City tagging along after Aurors. It was the part of work that she actually missed doing entertainment and culture reporting for Witch Weekly.

"Guilty as charged," she admitted. "But most of my family are dyed in the wool Hogwarts alums." It occurred to her then that making a future here with Thad meant she'd likely be the only Pucey who ever went to Ilvermorny. "My cousins never mentioned that. That's kind of cool."

"Well, annoying collar aside, your suit is great. Very dapper."

She shrugged. "I'm not sure if it's completely period accurate?" she said, though she didn't think anyone was keeping score. "I thought it was going to be a bit over the top, but turns out it's on the demure side." Some people had gone all-on on their outfits but she liked her little bit of sparkle.

"Oh, it's not as cool as it sounds. Plenty of the ghosts at the castle are interesting in some way, but I don't think Binns has changed his lectures since well before he died and that was a while ago. It tends to be the one where people try and catch up on sleep if they're tired," they explained.

Frank grinned widely, very pleased with the compliment. "Thank you. I actually asked the tailor to make it in a way that it can be re-altered to slightly more modern lines and bought the suit," they said. "I've been waiting for a bit of an excuse to invest in one for formal events." They already owned slightly less formal suiting and several varieties of formal robes because of work, but nothing black or white tie until now.

They snorted mostly to themself. "I'm pretty sure I saw someone wearing wings earlier, so I don't think people were being too strict on the historical inspiration."

"Oh," said Dagny, understanding now. "Yeah, we had a few classes like that. Like arithmancy. No dead teachers, though." That wasn't to say that the school didn't have its share of ghostly inhabitants. Any buildings that had been around for hundreds of years was sure to pick up a few along the way, she supposed.

The suit seemed like a smart investment. "Well, it's a good look on you." Dagny's brow furrowed slightly. "I feel like I've seen you somewhere before," she admitted. "But I'm just gonna go ahead and guess Winstagram? It never fails to amaze me how everyone seems to know everyone else."

"I did a couple of years of arithmancy, but it wasn't for me," they said. The OWL had been more than enough of that topic, interesting though it was. "I was never one for falling asleep in class unless something else was wrong," they said and shrugged.

Still clutching their stack of books Frank took another look at the woman's face. "Unless you've been doing a lot with the Ministry Transport department that's probably it," they agreed. "I usually have multicoloured hair, if that helps," they suggested. They laughed slightly and nodded. "I know what you mean. The fact most of us went to the same school promotes it for sure, but I didn't grow up in the magical world so I sometimes feel a bit a bit left out," they said.

Arithmancy definitely hadn't been Dagny's favourite elective, but she'd infinitely preferred it above slaving over a cauldron, despite the usual family love for brewing.

Chances were they had a mutual friend of acquaintance; multicoloured hair sounded familiar. Perhaps someone from Witch Weekly or associated with the Magpies since those were the largest part of her social circle other than family or the other Ilvermorny alums. "I feel that. I've been here just over a year and have family here, but it still feels a bit like a secret club or something." She wrinkled her nose, realising she was probably talking too much. "I'm Dagny, by the way."

"I mean I have a load of people from school," Frank said. "But I didn't always keep in touch very well." They knew it was a big problem with being both fiercely independent and an introvert, but they liked people plenty if they could find the right ones.

"Oh, right!" they said, realising they hadn't introduced themself either. "I'm Frank or Frankie. I use they/them pronouns. Nice to meet you." They smiled warmly at Dagny, somewhat assured they wouldn't meet rejection given the ongoing conversation and her comments about their suit. They juggled the books to under their arm and held out a hand.

"It's nice to meet you too." The pronouns weren't all that surprising given the suit, but that was one area even her inquisitive nature refrained from prying out of politeness. She shook Frank's hand, smiling.

Having kept half an eye on the book signing queues during their conversation, Dagny noticed that there seemed to be a few more people gravitating towards the authors. "I think I'm going to join Dupree’s line before it gets too busy," she apologised. The British were indeed very good at queueing, but no one liked getting stuck in a long line, especially at a party.

Frank looked more closely at the lines again and nodded. They didn't really seem to be getting any shorter, and they could see that more people were approaching. Despite a longing look at Tashiro Akimi's line it was Issawi's line that they turned towards. "I should probably just start if I want half a chance of getting through everyone I want to," they agreed. "Maybe next time we meet you'll have worked out where you know me from!" Truly they had no idea if Dagny would cross their path again, but magical Britain was only so large, so it seemed somewhat likely.

They gave an awkward little wave as they parted for different lines. Maybe they should concentrate on working out some words for the different authors so they didn't sound like an idiot when they got to the front of the line?

Welcome: Sofía and OPEN
[info]sofiagomez
2022-07-03 03:52 pm UTC (link)
Sofía knew there was a chance that she would run into Hugo tonight and she was trying not to focus on that or feel bitter about the end of their friendship. She was almost, but not quite, dismayed that it was actually incredibly easy to let all that negativity wash over her like water from a duck’s back. The torch she’d carried for so long had been well and truly extinguished after seeing a side of Hugo she’d never known existed. When she did let herself think back on those feelings, they were dull and insubstantial to everything she now felt for Bash. Since the first moment she’d met Sebastian Pucey there had been a connection unlike anything she had ever experienced before and Sofía couldn’t regret any of the choices she’d made.

Having attended last year’s gala with her parents, she was looking forward to this one even more. Since there was a theme, shopping had been a little more difficult and Sofía had felt entirely washed out after trying several empire-line gowns in varying pastel shades. Sofía wondered whether she should even bother with something regency-inspired and if she should pick another historical era right up until she had come across a a yellow dress with pink flowers embroidered across the fabric. When she had first seen the dress, she hadn’t expected to like it at all. Yet instead of making her look jaundiced, the vivid colour enhanced her hispanic features and she’d found herself beaming at her reflection.

Sofía had enlisted her mother’s help in getting ready, Tracey first straightening Sofía’s natural curls and then helping her set the dark locks into an up-do that complemented the dress, finished with carefully-placed and charmed ringlets. There were times in her life when Sofía had felt jealousy over her mother’s traditionally beautiful features, even though logically she knew she shouldn’t compare herself to those beauty standards. There was none of that tonight, Sofía experiencing something almost like synesthesia: somehow, the sight of her reflection felt the same as when Bash held her close and told her he loved her, vibrant and warm and powerful all at once.

While Bash went to explore the bar, Sofía took a moment to enjoy the atmosphere. She had just finished the last of her work study programmes which meant there were just a few more months of her apprenticeship left. This weekend might well be the last chance she had to properly relax and let her hair down until she was qualified.

Re: Welcome: Sofía and Scarlett

The theme of the night didn't particularly appeal to Scarlett, but she'd had so much fun at last year's gala--the sense of nostalgia about meeting Beau and charming him to bed for the first time was stronger than she'd expected--that she couldn't resist attending again this year. It had taken her longer than expected to choose the right dress, and the one she chose was far more conservative than anything she would typically wear, but she felt like a princess in it and loved the way the different shades of blue made her eyes stand out even more.

Going casual with her hair and subtle with her makeup, Scar was sure that her dress would be the focal point she wanted it to be. It had taken several fittings to get the dress right, considering how petite she was, and though she felt a little bit swamped in it, she loved how powerful it made her feel, as if she were some princess married off to the crown prince of another nation only to kill him and take the throne for herself. She had a feeling Penny would approve of the imagination.

It was early in the evening, Mrs. Nott having just finished giving the welcoming speech though still a little bit of time before the meal would start being served, and she wandered around for a few minutes before spotting Sofia. Detouring toward her friend, she greeted her with a smile. "Look at you, radiating like sunshine in that dress," she complimented Sofia, the words only having a hint of shallowness. Sofia was beautiful, of course, but the dress was a little underwhelming in her opinion. Though perhaps that was because she felt so damn regal, herself.

"Scarlett! Hi." Sofía returned the smile, a little surprised to see Scarlett wearing something so traditional-looking. She looked gorgeous, though that was less of a surprise. "You look amazing. Like... an empress who's just seduced her way into power." That was a bit of a bold thing for Sofía to say and a testament to how she'd come to trust Scarlett over the last few months.

She glanced down at herself. "And thank you." Sofía was pleased with how her outfit for the gala had come together and even more pleased by the reaction that a preview of her corset had garnered from Bash - since she'd got ready at her parents' house, it had only been a photo, otherwise she suspected that they might not have made it to the gala after all. "I did the big ball gown thing for my quinceañera so I thought I'd try something different." Sofía had celebrated her fifteenth birthday surrounded by family and all the trappings of her Mexican heritage. At the request of her grandparents, she had spent the majority of the summer holidays in Mexico and they’d offered her an opportunity to do something she knew she’d never get to do properly at home. It had been a relatively small party but incredibly touching: all of the symbolic gestures had brought Sofía to happy tears, especially dancing with her dad. The way he’d looked at her so proudly had just been the icing on the cake.

"Are you here with anyone?" she asked curiously.

The compliment teased a small, delighted laugh from Scarlett, and she tipped her head slightly as she gave a little curtsey. "That was the idea," she admitted, thrilled that the concept had translated. She'd also quite loved the thought of teasing the men in her life with it, of knowing they would look at her, so covered up, and not help thinking about what she would look like as they peeled it off of her. Though, granted, she'd only promised Aldrich he would get to take her home tonight.

If she were being completely honest, she didn't really understand what a quinceañera was, but she supposed it didn't matter. "It's good to change things up. And that color looks amazing on you! Not many people can pull off yellow." It was just one of those colors that wasn't universally flattering, in her opinion.

Scarlett couldn't help snorting a short laugh at that, shaking her head. "Gods, no. I did promise Aldrich he could take me home after, but I wanted an open dance card for the night. Though Hugo did promise me a dance." He'd surprised her with just how much fun he could be, even if it had taken far longer to seal the deal with him than she'd expected. So far, he'd stuck to his word and not developed feelings for her, so she supposed she would keep him around a bit longer.

"Aldrich's a lucky guy." Sofía took a quick glance around, expecting to spot him keeping an eye on Scarlett. The last she'd known, whatever he and Scarlett had was off, but while she was curious about what might have changed she didn't want to pry. Besides, if there was anything she wanted to confide, Scarlett was never backwards in coming forwards with details of her sex life.

She winced at the mention of Hugo. "Well, good luck with that," she said dryly. "Chances are he'll end up working all night."

Penny & Hailey

That Gala was to be the first time that Penny would have her girlfriend and her Phoenix in the same room since they had started dating. There were worries over how it’d go, but Penny wasn’t letting it show. Her dress had been chosen very carefully, paired with a beautiful black crown that was woven into her dark curls. She thought she had rather hit her mark, she looked rather dangerous, and regal.

They had yet to run into Phoenix since arriving, but the night was still young. The band had just started up, and that song. Gods, she loved that song! It was one of her favorites, and it so fantastic to hear the band playing it classical. “We should dance,” she said as she leaned close to Hailey. Those dark orbs met the other’s gaze, her smile genuine. Her stomach may have been in knots over how very official this all felt, but looking into Hailey’s eyes made it all disappear. Hailey was why she was doing this, she loved her girlfriend.

“I’ll even let you lead,” was said teasingly, though as her eyes slid over Hailey’s outfit again, they were hungry. Hailey looked so damn good, Penny couldn’t wait to get her out of those clothes later. They were going to look even better on the bedroom floor.

Unlike last year, Hailey was not attending the gala with her family, but rather as Penny's date. She'd initially bristled at the thought of the gala, if only because a Lords and Ladies ball was so damn patriarchal, but when Penny had expressed interest in it, she'd shoved the knee-jerk anti-patriarchy reaction down and decided to lean into it enough to show her girlfriend a good time.

Piecing together her outfit had been something of an adventure, but she'd gone more steampunk than historically accurate, and she had to admit, she kind of loved the result. Especially with the hint of pirate influence. And with the way Penny was dressed, it made her feel as if she'd kidnapped Penny from her evil lord of a father who'd intended to marry her off for his own political gain.

"You know me so well," Hailey teased back warmly, leaning in to steal a quick kiss from her girlfriend. Letting her hand slip into Penny's, she lead the other woman out to the dance floor, which had expanded just before dessert had been served. She hadn't gone to any of the dance lessons, and so she kept them more on the outskirts of the dance floor, making sure they didn't get in the way of those who were doing the more formal dance that had, apparently, been taught and rehearsed in those weekly lessons.

Even though Katarina wasn't hugely interested in any of the authors present she was very interested in the historical dress and dancing aspects of the evening. Plus the charity itself was important of course.

She had decided the traditional white and cream most people were familiar with wasn't the regency colour for her, but she had found a reproduction in red velvet that she liked and paired it with appropriate white accessories. The flat slippers were uncomfortable because of her flat feet, but she had taken the chance at the dancing lessons and would be making use of them.

She stood at the side of the dancefloor, patting nervously at her ridiculous, but relatively period-accurate, hair. She was being strangely indecisive and couldn't decide if she wanted to approach someone or wait to be approached. She had practised dancing with people of different genders in both leading and following positions, and now she couldn't decide which she wanted to do. She had eyed up several beautiful women, but not quite made herself make the first move. Then she couldn't quite bring herself to catch the eye of the man or two who she recognised from the classes she'd attended. It was so unnatural to her to made any type of advances on a man.

She held up a gloved hand and adjusted the fingers slightly, the unused dance card she had made for herself dangling from the wrist.

End of Dinner: Caleb & OPEN

Caleb was feeling unsteady on his feet. Leaving the dinner table between courses to visit the toilets had brought on the realisation that mistakes had been made rather rapidly. He should have known that trying to match the family members he could see drink-for-drink was a mistake. As an irregular drinker at best it had been ridiculous to try and keep up with people he knew regularly drank wine with dinner.

As he walked back out of the toilets he probably looked significantly smarter than even when wearing a normal suit. His choice of suit, enhanced by the imitation of an authentic waistcoat Trina had convinced him to embroider, was cut in such a way it forced his usually questionable posture much straighter. Unfortunately it did nothing to alleviate his poor balance and rounding a decorative flower display near the edge of the seating area he couldn't correct when he found someone coming the other way and ended up stumbling into them slightly. His arms automatically coming up to their shoulders to both help himself stay upright and prevent any more falling in general. "Sorry, sorry," he said, not quite slurring his words but definitely noting he needed to switch to water. Now. He took back his hands and gave a slightly grimacing smile.
