RP: a break in the dam
Who: Alexander & Holly
What: Holly comes clean.
When: June 9th, 2028; evening
Where: Holly & Alexander's flat at The Quatre
Warnings: CW - panic attack, disc. of birth family, teen pregnancy, abandonment.
Completion Status: in-progress

Holly had been dodging calls from John Gardner for over a month now. Each time, she had a panic attack. Each time, she hid away from life, work, her parents, and even Alexander. She'd received a large packet at her office today, with no return address, but when she opened it, the Fawley Foundation letterhead gave away its sender immediately.

She'd locked her office door, had her assistant clear her schedule, and ready every word of it. Pages and pages, handwritten letters, photos. Some of it had enraged her - how the infant had made some strange things happen and the family didn't want her. Some of it had broken her heart. So much of it had.

Her little sister (apparently without any magical propensities), who she didn't even know existed, had gotten pregnant at 13 years old. The father was another child. Holly's biological parents, Simon and Lois Cassidy, had decided to raise the baby as their own. Adopt her. But then... Then the strange happenings. A plate that was dropped by accident but didn't shatter. The television changing itself to baby-friendly channels with no explanation. Simon and Lois Cassidy had dropped the baby off - born only in March, only two months old at the time - with the same Fawley representative that had taken Holly when she was seven. John Gardner had taken her case, just like he had with Holly. The now three-month old was living at the Fawley Foundation orphanage.

Just three months old. Perhaps not even magical. But already abandoned. Like Holly.

She was gorgeous. With dark hair, green-hazel eyes. Like Holly's. And her mother's. And - Holly assumed - like her like little sister's. The little girl was colicky and nearly impossible to soothe. Holly knew it wasn't just the colic though. There is a specific pain, deep down, nearly impossible to access, to acknowledge, but always there, that comes with being abandoned. She couldn't comprehend it at seven, she couldn't imagine how an infant must feel.

She left her office in a blur, didn't even remember the walk home. Set the papers on the table in the kitchen. Took off her blazer and hung it on the chair tucked in there. She toed off her heels and made her way to the sofa, curling up in a soft blanket to stare blankly at the wall. She hardly even heard the door open when Alexander arrived home from the office, hours later. The flat was silent and dark, though she hadn't bothered to turn on any lights. In fact, she hadn't moved at all.

The papers on the table didn't phase Alexander when he walked in the door. It was no secret that Holly brought work home with her. Hell he brought his own work home. Notebooks of his personal thoughts on the trainees and plans for what their weeks looked like.

He flipped on the light. Holly usually turned it one when she came home. Her papers were in sight but not her. "Holly?" He said in a soft, low voice. There was no answer. He set his bag down next to the paper and rounded the couch. There she was underneath a blanket. He sat caddy-corner to her and placed a hand on her leg. "Holly?" He said again assuming she was asleep.

She'd been more private, distant. He hadn't pushed. When she was ready she'd talk about it. She always did. He moved closer to her, placing a hand on her. Not moving. If she wanted to talk about it then he'd be there.

Holly looked to Alexander when he placed a hand on her, but didn't say hello. Instead, one hand snaked its way out from under the cozy, fluffy throw blanket and pointed to the table. The papers. The pictures. They were tucked into an unassuming manila folder. That folder felt like it contained a bomb. One that could surely blow up her entire life.

What to do? What was there to do? She just pointed, her gaze distant, not focusing on anything in particular at all.

"You want me to read them?" He stood up and walked back over to the table. It looked like any folder she brought over. He waited for an answer. He opened the front cover. The Fawley Foundation? Holly worked with the foundation in some capacity, planning and organizing events mostly.

He shuffled through the papers inside the folder. A Simon and Lois Cassidy were listed along with a young girl. "Holly, what does this mean?" She'd told him that Gaspard and Eleanor had adopted her.

He needed her to talk. The papers inside outlined her birth parents giving her up for adoption at her first sign of magic. He felt anger welling up inside him for the first time. How could parents do that? At the first sign of something completely unexpected. And do it twice. He picked up the folder and returned to her on the couch, setting it on the coffee table.

"I..." Her voice cracked at her first attempt. She hadn't even licked her lips in hours.

She tried again, not yet attempting to sit up or focus her eyes. "My biological family. Have a little sister. And now a niece. She's only three months old," she said, but then the tears came - only three months old! The monsters!

In a moment the last few weeks came into focus and he sighed. Had she been feeling this way for weeks or did she just get all the information today? He was ready to curse her birth parents for what they did to her. To her sister and her niece, but there was a bigger question looming in his mind. Not yet. He needed to let Holly come around. To feel all the feelings that were clashing and roiling inside of her.

He shifted on the couch offering the expanse of his chest for her to cry into. It always made her feel better. Pulling out his wand he flicked it in the direction of the kitchen. Cabinets opening. The sound of pouring. Then bubbling. The coffee maker had started. If she wanted some, he'd make it.

"Are they still in Fawley's system?" At thirteen her sister may have moved on to Hogwarts, but her neice was still too young.

Holly shook her head, he wasn't understanding. "Just the baby," she spit out. And then she sobbed again, struggling for breath, definitely having a full-blown, hyperventilating panic attack.

He needed her to use her words. Did she want to adopt the baby? They could. The child would want for nothing. He could take care of her while she was off on business trips. "What about the baby, Holly?" He knew this was hard and her birth parents were bastards but he wasn't them.

"Breathe with me." He started slowly, in through the nose and out through his mouth. "I'm here. You're here. This is our home. You're not alone."
