RP: How Much is the Owl in the Window?
Who: Gareth & Holly
What: Gareth looks for a new pet; Friendly Run-In
When: 3/1/2028
Where: Eeylop’s Owl Emporium, Diagon Alley
Warnings: Live Animals
Completion Status: Ongoing Complete

After a full season under house arrest, it felt odd to be walking the streets of Diagon. Gareth welcomed the first matches of the season had done as a welcome distraction from his abysmal dating prospects.

Part of him wondered if he should reach back out to Skye. They may not have worked out romantically but from their talk on the way out of the Prophet's offices he could see a burgeoning friendship. She has my number, he thought as he opened the door to Eeylop's Owl Emporium.

He'd been happy to be ‘getting back out there’ he found himself feeling a bit lonely around his home in Montrose. Pushing the door open, he waited for his ears to adjust to the different pitches of cries coming from the caged birds.

Holly was speaking with the Floor Manager about 'renting out' a few of the less dangerous potential pets for a petting zoo at The Fawley Foundation Home for the kids. Shingleton was sponsoring the whole thing, and the creatures would be up for adoption and sale as well, but it would give the kids some fun time with magical and non- animals for an afternoon.

Holly loved her time with the Foundation, nearly as much as she loved her work at Shingleton, so putting the two together felt good.

When a customer came in, she excused herself and looked around, figuring she could speak with the Manager some more after without disturbing sales. However, when she turned, she nearly bumped right into the man. He looked familiar - was he an actor? Or maybe he worked at Shingleton? - but she couldn't place it. "Oh, sorry," she apologized, "Don't want to get in your way," she gave him a smile.

"Sorry." It seemed her had a bait of bumping into witches. He hadn't seen the petite witch as he moved down the line of barn owls. "I'm a bit in my own head." Her smile was magnetic, disarming.

There was a flash of recognition in her eyes. And his eyes went wide. Was she one of the obliviators that had been called out to Scotland last year? After his last run in with one of the obliviators he wasn't keen on telling random witches his name.

"I usually am, so I know the feeling all too well," she said, her smile unwavering. "I'm so sorry but do I know you?" Her head cocked in curiosity, she introduced herself, "Holly Shingleton," and put out a hand in 'official' greeting.

"I'm here arranging an event for The Fawley Foundation, you?" She asked, her gaze going to the owls he'd been perusing.

"Gareth Reginald." He met her hand in a firm shake. "Trainer for the Montrose Magpies. Searching for an animal companion." He refrained from the insufferable flourish he watched some of the team players pull on unsuspecting groupies that found their way into the Drunken Zebra after matches. She was here on business.

"Fawley? What type of event are they planning?"

"Oh! Oh my goodness, I do know you!" She knew he probably didn't know her, though, "My Dad has a box at the stadium in Montrose, mostly for work networking, he's not a huge Quidditch fan, no offense, but I met you at one of his things there last year," her smile was genuine but showed a little of her chagrin. She was good with names, even if it was sometimes embarrassing.

"Oh!" She exclaimed, surprised by his interest, "We're sponsoring an event at the Home, doing a petting zoo of magical and muggle creatures for the kids, and to get some of the animals adopted, too, and raise money for the Foundation. I don't normally do anything with the company's events, but I'm an ambassador for Fawley, so between that and my work at Shingleton, I volunteered to help out with this one." She shrugged, it was probably too much information.

"Gaspard's daughter." Now the charisma made sense. Part of his "penance" was helping out with the box's at the stadium. Gaspard was intimidating, but the smile was the same. "No offense taken. I understand Quidditch isn't everyone's thing." He broke into a smile. He didn't meet many people that work closely with the Foundation.

"That sounds like an exciting event. Did you need anymore help?" The words just fell out. He had no idea if he had the time with the season, but there might be a chance he could spare the time.

She nodded, "Yeah," and blushed a little bit. It was usually how people knew her. Come to think of it - that was how she had met Alexander, but the thought made her groan internally, that was embarrassing, come to think of it. "Dad likes when you guys come up to impress his colleagues, though," she said, honestly. Gaspard could be a lot but he was appreciative, too.

Her eyebrows nearly hit her hairline, "Wait, really? Do you volunteer with Fawley, too?" She hadn't seen him at anything - that she could recall - and his name hadn't been on the list of those helping with the petting zoo.

“Honestly, I never have.” He felt a bit embarassed admitting that, especially to her. “To be honest, I spent most of last year stuck in Scotland. Long story. But I’m wanting to do more, outside of just training a Quidditch team.” He felt like an idiot admitting it. He just wanted to do better.

Her face turned confuse at his admission - he just in this moment decided he wanted to volunteer? That was... hinky.

"And you just happened to decide right now you want to take part in a petting zoo with children?" She waited for him to reply, trying to get a feel for him in the meantime.

He looked back at the barn owl they had been standing by. "I've spent the last few years doing being a right git. I really just want to do better." He didn't have much experience with children, but he knew animals. Well animals that could be kept as pets. "I know it's an impulsive off." If she needed more information, he'd give it whether 'I flew drunk over a muggle village and my father is a philandering rock star' was a good excuse for altruism, he wasn't sure.

"I..." It did still seem off but she never wanted to turn down a volunteer. "Well," she said after a moment, "I actually think that's great. Should I owl you with information?" She gave him a small smile. "I've already set up what I need here today and need to be getting back but I can owl you in the next few days?" She looked to the shop owner, who seemed a little put out that she was keeping his customer busy rather than allowing him to look at the animals to purchase.

"An owl would work well [address]. And thanks." He held out his hand for a shake. He had settled on a barn owl a few minutes ago, but with the prospect of giving back to the community, he had waited to make his purchase. "I look forward to working with you."
