What: Penny's been arrested. Her one phone call goes to Hailey.

They were giving her one phone call. Who in Hades was she going to call? Phoenix was gone, so far gone she had no idea how to even reach him. There wasn't a chance in hell that she would call Manny or Rhys, they'd be so disappointed. If she wouldn't call them, she couldn't call their parents.
There was literally one person she could call, the one person that Penny wasn't even sure would help. It would serve Hailey right to leave her arse to rot.
Yet there she stood, in the ugliest and thinnest black and white robes, calling Hailey Montgomery. "Please," she begged softly as she listened to the sound of ringing.
The phone number wasn't one Hailey recognized, and it was awfully late for anyone to be calling. But Hailey wasn't asleep yet, and so she answered it with a questioning "Hello?"
Penny let out a sigh of relief at hearing her voice, her own was strained to her own ears. She could only imagine what Hailey thought. "I need your help, I'm so sorry it's so late. I was arrested for drug trafficking," she said quickly, hopeful as hell that Hailey knew her as well as Penny thought she did. She had no idea how long she had, but she could see the auror already checking their watch. "I've got the money for bail at my flat, please?" she begged softly.
Even though the person on the other end didn't identify themselves, Hailey would have known that voice anywhere, even as thick with emotions as it was. Her eyebrows shot up in surprise at what Penny said, though, completely surprised at why she was calling. "What... How the fuck did that happen?" she asked, flabbergasted. Penny was a lot of things, and Hailey had always assumed Penny peddled in less than legal wares, but she'd never known Penny to dabble in drugs, in any way, shape, or form. She wasn't making any promises about getting the bail money, though, not until she knew more.
"I've no idea," she said defeated, sighing sadly. "Apparently there was something in my back room." She was defensive; they hadn't found her secret vault attached to the office. That was where the truly hot items were. She had a feeling she knew exactly who had brought the drugs in. It was the same little shit that had helped her unload the last shipment Phoenix had sent back. River. He was going to pay for this, so long as she could get out of this.
Okay, so drugs being in her backroom wasn't promising for building a defense, but Hailey supposed that was a problem for tomorrow. "How did they get tipped off? You know what, nevermind. Relief flooded her, tears welling in her eyes. The auror was now coming towards her. She had to be quick. "60,000 galleons, and it's in my closet. You'll know it when you see it, thank you," she said with a low sigh of relief. "I've got to go," she said, one hand lifting to wipe at the tear that threatened to fall. Time seemed to stand still as she waited in the little cell. She didn't doubt that Hailey would be able to crack the security she kept around her safe inside the closet. Dark locks that were usually pulled back into a ponytail were now left wild and free, and she felt as worn out as she looked. Her usual confidence was temporarily gone, as she crossed the lobby in two steps, directly into Hailey. "Hailey," she cried out happily, wrapping her arms around the other woman's shoulders. There was something comforting about seeing her oldest friend just then, she didn't want to touch on why. She was just relieved that she did in fact still have one person with whom she could trust to know the real her.
Hailey whistled at the amount Penny stated. That seemed awfully steep for a first offense, and a nonviolent one, at that! "Okay. I'll get it, babe," she promised. She shifted, sliding her arm around Penny's back to support her as they walked out of the building, knowing they'd not be able to apparate until then.
"Please," she said in reply to Hailey's words. She would take the offered help, letting her friend lead her out of the building.
"Can we go to my place?" she asked hopefully, and when Hailey confirmed they could, she felt another wave of relief flood her. This was all such a nightmare, she just wanted to be home in her warm bed.
When the pair apparated to her flat, she slipped away from Hailey's embrace. "If you don't mind, I'd like to change out of this clothing before you drill me with questions. I promise you, I'll answer all of them," she said, feeling far too honest and raw in that moment. She hadn't lied to Iris; she didn't have a claim on Penny, but that didn't mean she wouldn't be helpless to it if Penny were ever willing to be claimed in the way Hailey had always wanted.
"It's always been you, you idiot," she breathed a moment later, her heart racing in her chest. She shouldn't have told her that. It wouldn't do either of them any good, but seeing Penny in that ridiculous pink robe, the silk doing little to hide her subtle curves, seemed to have undone something in her.
There were a lot of responses that she wanted to throw at Hailey for asking if she was insane. Unfortunately before anything could come out, Hailey said it was always her. Her heart felt so heavy and she had to fight the urge to just kiss Hailey. That was usually how she avoided the uncomfortable situation, sex always stopped the conversation. They didn't have that option, she realized.
"You're practically married! Haven't you been seeing some for a year, or more?" she asked, surprised as she turned so that she could face her friend. Hailey scoffed at the idea that she was practically married. That wasn't even close to describing her relationship with Rori, though she realized it was the first time she'd thought about her girlfriend since getting the call from Penny. "Oh please. We've been seeing each other exclusively, yeah, but it's been super casual," she pointed out. "And it hasn't been a year yet." They'd met at Hailey's birthday, after all, which was in April.
Hailey didn't let herself look down at the ways the robe slid over Penny's skin, spreading to show tantalizing glimpses as she shifted, but she was all too aware of it. "And you've always been mine. But I've never been enough for you," she pointed out, mild annoyance seeping into her voice. It had never been her choice for them to not be together. It was always Penny who couldn't commit. "I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting someone who loves me enough to not want to fuck other people." And with Penny, it wasn't just other women who tempted her, it was men, too. How could Hailey compete with that?
Penny was far too raw for the conversation they were having, but she had started it. She wasn't going to run now, not when she was in her own house. What was she going to do, toss Hailey out? Hardly.
"You're right, it isn't too much to ask. You're more than worth it," she said, though from her tone it was obvious she was thinking about something. There was this voice at the back of her mind that kept telling her to stop, that she was pushing past the point of no return. Yet for some reason, she found herself still talking. "If you're serious? Let's do this. Put up or shut up, isn't that the saying? I'm tired of being on the sidelines of your life, and I'd rather not keep you on mine," she said honestly. "Obviously not right now, I'm some sort of felon, but maybe once I get all of this cleared up?"
Gods damn it all, that wasn't what Penny was supposed to say. It wasn't one of her usual lines, and it certainly wasn't making her feel better about their situation. If Penny really believed she was worth it, then why had she avoided anything serious with her all these years?
And then Penny was talking more, and Hailey couldn't believe her ears. Was she serious? Was she truly willing to give it a go? "Fuck, babe. You have no idea how long I've waited for you to say that." She should say no. Technically, she had a girlfriend, but she wasn't even sure how serious Rori was about her. She didn't feel very serious about her, something she'd forced herself to admit recently. "I don't want to wait," she blurted out. She leaned into Penny, her hand coming up to cup the side of her face before pushing back into Penny's tousled locks. Her lips met hers, and she poured the years of unresolved feelings into the kiss.
The kiss blew Penny away, a low noise slipping from her without meaning to. She kissed Hailey back passionately, doing her best to match the other woman's feelings she could feel. She wanted Hailey to know she was all in, she was going to give it a shot. She had been tossing the idea around for over a year, she needed to know if Phoenix was right, or if she was depriving herself the most epic love that she could ever experience.
Her own hands came up to grab at Hailey's top, tugging at her to get the other woman into her lap. She needed more, she wanted all of her girlfriend just then. Gods, she had a girlfriend. A thought that had her smiling into the kiss, nipping playfully at the other woman's lower lip. At the silent urging, Hailey shifted onto Penny's lap, straddling her, her hands slipping under the edges of her ridiculous pink robe to stroke that silky soft skin she'd not felt in far too long. She shivered as Penny nipped her lower lip. "You have no idea," she breathed, her hands stroking back over Penny's shoulders, knocking the robe open a bit more.
"You've had a rough day, though. I think some pampering is in order," she said, pulling back a bit. She pulled her lower lip between her own teeth before sliding back off Penny's lap, standing up and holding her hand out to Penny. When she took it, Hailey tugged her up and led her up the stairs to Penny's room and into the bathroom. She didn't say anything as she tugged her jumper up and off, nor when she undid her trousers and slid them off.
It felt so bloody good to have Hailey in her lap. Not bothered as she let her robe slip further open, farther back off her shoulders. "I want to watch us make love in front of the mirror," she murmured against her soft skin, before nipping playfully. Her hands started at Hailey's hips, slipping around and down, towards her opening.
It wasn't long before they were standing before each other completely nude. Hailey had envisioned showering with Penny, washing her hair for her and scrubbing the day off, but she supposed a bath could be just as intimate and lovely. She turned and bent a bit to slide her fingers through the water, testing the temperature. A casual bit of wandless magic heated the water further. Before she could turn to find the bath salts and bubbles, Penny was pressed up behind her.
A little gasping breath slipped from her lips at Penny's words, at the feel of her hand sliding down her toned abs to her core. She had been wanting to say something to her, she owed Hailey so much more than a thank you. Her brain had just turned to mush over the past hour with Hailey in the bath.
"Of course, babe. It's always been you," Hailey murmured in reply. How could Penny have ever believed any different? She took Penny's hand and guided her to the bed, curling up behind her as the big spoon to cuddle as they fell asleep. There would be far more fallout to deal with, but that was tomorrow's problem.
